Greater Washington Heart Walk Where: National Mall When: Saturday, November 9, 8:30am - 12:00pm Metro: Smithsonian (Orange / Blue), Archives (Green / Yellow) Volunteer for the 2013 Greater Washington Heart Walk! Did you know that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer worldwide? In fact, someone dies from cardiovascular disease every 38 seconds! DCYP Kiwanis will be volunteering as cheerers at the Greater Washington Heart Walk on November 9, 2013. Over 12,000 residents from the Metropolitan Washington, DC area will come together on the National Mall to raise awareness and funds to help fight heart disease and stroke. Heart Walk presents a wonderful opportunity for our group to get involved in the battle against cardiovascular disease. National Zoo Social *NEW* Where: National Mall When: Sunday, November 17, 10:30am - 4:00pm Metro: Woodley Park / Zoo (Red) When is the last time you strolled through the zoo? As we stroll, we will visit some of the programs -Elephant Training at 11, Meet a Zebra at 1:15, and Octopus feedings at 3. We will meet at the Visitor's Center at 10:30 and go from there! Clean Up At Miriam's Kitchen Where: Miriam's Kitchen (2401 Virginia Ave NW) When: Saturday, November 23, 8:00am - 12:00pm Metro: Foggy Bottom (Orange / Blue) We're starting a new project with Miriam's Kitchen this November. Miriam's Kitchen is committed to ending chronic homelessness in DC by creating meaningful connections with chronically homeless individuals, placing them in permanent supportive housing, and ensuring they have the necessary support to remain in housing. They advocate for permanent supportive housing as a long-term solution, while meeting short-term needs by providing healthy meals and high-quality social services to more than 3,500 chronically homeless individuals each year. In order to keep up with all of their work, volunteers are relied upon to keep their facilities in great shape. We'll be helping them with a big clean up on Saturday, November 23. The event time is 8 AM - Noon, however, we could end early if we have a lot of people. They will also provide pizza for all volunteers. To sign up to volunteer, email dcyp.service@gmail.com . SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: October's Outstanding Member Award: Wade Fowler At each member meeting, DCYP Kiwanis recognizes members who have recently made outstanding contributions to the club. At the October 23 meeting, the Board recognized member Wade Fowler. Since officially joining the club in June, he has been extremely active in club events and was a great addition to many of the summer activities. Wade is always willing to help with just about anything that is needed - from cooking breakfast at the Children’s Inn, to landscaping and pruning the rose bushes outside a local high school before the first day of school, to harvesting fresh produce for the food bank. Wade, we thank you for your contributions to the club and are proud to recognize you with the October Outstanding Member Award! |
