SUMMER THEOLOGY ON TAP

The Office of Young Adult Ministry presents the Summer Theology on Tap series: How Can I Find God? From NGO's to CEO's. It will take place at Buffalo Billiards on Dupont Circle on the following Tuesdays: July 16, 23, 30 and  August 6, 13, 20. All young adults (21-late 30s) are invited for Happy Hour from 6-7pm with a talk and Q/A to follow from 7-8pm. Catholic leaders from across a variety of professions (legal, medical, social service, financial, ministerial, etc.) will be answering the question that so many adults, and especially young adults, ask amid the busyness and distractions of DC life: "How can I find God?" These presenters will share how and where they have found God and continue to find God in their personal and professional lives. [wapadc] Baltimore county commission on disabilities housing report

Greetings. For those of you working on housing or disabilities, I thought this report may be of interest.  The housing work group for the Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities has been working on a report on housing for people with disabilities within the county.  As chair of the committee, I am pleased to give you a copy of the report.  Please share it with others as appropriate.

All the best,

Jo Anne Schneider

Please see the formal release on the report below for an outline of the report:

KEVIN KAMENETZ                                                                                                    ANDREA VAN ARSDALE, DIRECTOR

County Executive                                                                                                                                 Department of Planning

            June 21, 2013

It is with great pleasure that, in our official capacities as Chair and Vice-Chair of the Commission on Disabilities, we present the report, “Housing Availability and Resources For People with Disabilities in Baltimore County.” Our Housing Work Group has been researching and developing the report for the past year, and it represents the input from Commissioners from non-profit agencies, local and state government agencies, and higher education.

The report is set up in three sections:  Housing Need;  Review of Existing Resources;  and, Recommendations.   While the report is ambitious in its scope, the Commission has developed four recommendations (from a total of 15) which we believe can be addressed immediately:

Ÿ      Encourage the County Council and the Planning Department to prioritize creating more accessible housing of all forms in Baltimore County.

Ÿ      Provide training to all Public Housing Office staff regarding disability sensitivity, the needs of individuals with disabilities, the support systems that help them, the role of live-in companions and caregivers, and reasonable accommodations.

Ÿ      Working with the County Council, the Department of Permits, Approvals and Inspections and the OCIE Rental Office to develop policies that support the creation of shared housing for people with all levels of disability, and provide exemptions or financial assistance to property owners with disabilities to assist them in  complying with county codes as they change.

Ÿ      Create clear guidelines on accommodations for people with disabilities for both the Department of Permits, Approvals and Inspections and the Office of Code Inspections and Enforcement  Rental Office, and ensure that staff in these offices at all levels are trained in the Fair Housing Act, reasonable accommodations, cultural competence and how to interact with people with all types of disabilities.

We thank the Housing Work Group for their efforts in addressing the residential needs of our citizens with disabilities, and look forward to addressing the report’s recommendations with the appropriate staff from Baltimore County.

Sincerely,

Terri S. Parrish, Chair

Benjamin J. Dubin, Vice-Chair

Baltimore County Commission on Disabilities

IRB Boards and Qualitative Research: Insider Guidance for IRB Forms, Informed Consent

60-Minute On-Demand Webinar available in CD, MP4 or PDF Transcript.

The IRB process was originally designed to ensure participant safety in medical research. As such, the forms are designed for experimental or quantitative methods, focusing on informed consent and research procedures that may cause a risk to human subjects. Most of the people on IRB review boards are unfamiliar with qualitative research as well as the various procedures used in qualitative projects to obtain informed consent. This poses a particular challenge for investigators as their studies may be turned down because of this unfamiliarity with qualitative research and procedures.

This Webinar discusses effective strategies to fill out IRB forms for qualitative research and address questions often raised by IRB staff. The webinar starts by explaining that most qualitative projects should qualify as exempt or for expedited review. Your expert presenter will use examples to describe how to write an effective statement to justify an exempt or expedited rating.

This Webinar will also focus on informed consent. Most quantitative or experimental studies have elaborate informed consent forms that participants must sign before the study begins. While some interview and focus group studies will use consent forms, observation techniques and some interview studies will not obtain informed consent from every individual participant. The webinar will discuss when written consent is appropriate and how to write informed consent statements in language accessible to participants.

Key Take-Aways:

  • Why methods statements are the most important and difficult part of the IRB statement, and what you can do to get reviewers to champion yours
  • Clearly understand the rules for exemption and expedited review and be able to state those clearly to IRB staff
  • Strategies for writing appropriate consent forms
  • Strategies to explain situations where consent is not needed or blanket agency consent is appropriate
  • IRB concerns often come from insufficient explanations of methods and informed consent. What you can do to gain IRB approval

Who Should Attend:

Investigators developing qualitative studies. IRB board members and staff.

Limited-Time Offer Until June 28th!

Purchase this On-Demand Webinar in CD-Rom, MP4 or PDF Transcript for only $197 $147.
