Taste of Arlington Volunteer Where: In front of Ballston Common Mall (Wilson Blvd & N Taylor / N Randolph St) When: Sunday, May 17, (10:30am - 2:00pm) *NEW START TIME* Metro: Ballston (Orange / Silver) The Taste of Arlington, Arlington's largest street festival, features over 50 local restaurants, music, entertainment for kids, a dog park, and beer and wine tents for patrons to enjoy. DCYP will be volunteering at the festival on behalf of the charity beneficiary of the event and an organization we've worked with many times before with our fall gleaning events, the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). Duties may include helping with registration, pouring beer and wine, running carnival games for kids, assisting with the restaurant booths, etc. Volunteer headquarters is in a space accessed from the street in the mall building between CVS and Noodles & Co. We'll meet as a group in that space to register, get our t-shirts and assignments. Please look for our group first before registering. Our event coordinator (Wade) will be wearing a white DCYP Kiwanis t-shirt. Volunteers will receive a complimentary t-shirt and a booklet of 10 free taste tickets to use at the Taste of Arlington. For every volunteer at the event, AFAC will receive $50. DCYP will serve the 11am - 2pm shift. After our shift we'll enjoy the festival together and use our free tickets! Happy Hour / Meet & Greet *NEW* Where: Glen's Garden Market (2001 S Street NW) When: Wednesday, May 27, (6:00 - 8:00pm) Metro: Dupont (Red ) Join us for our May happy hour - an event scheduled to help us all adjust back to the work week after Memorial Day weekend! This month, we'll be heading over to a new spot - Glen's Garden Market in Dupont Circle. We'll have some tables reserved on the patio to enjoy the nice spring weather, so come ready for good weather, good drinks, good food, and good people! Croquet Day *NEW* Where: Hensley Park (4200 Eisenhower Avenue Alexandria, VA 22303) When: Saturday, May 30, (11:45am - 4:00pm) Metro: Van Dorn (Blue / Yellow) Croquet Day is a tournament-style competition for individuals and families. The event benefits SCAN, an organization that provides a range of services revolving around advocacy and support for children and families in the Northern Virginia region, and the funds raised at the event go to support SCAN's child abuse/neglect prevention programs. The tournament should attract roughly 200 participants and spectators. Types of volunteer work for the event include: food tents, registration, score keeper, activity tent, photography, etc. Hensley Park is a short drive from the Van Dorn Metro Station. Also be sure to sign-up through their volunteer portal here. SPECIAL ANNOUNCMENT (NEW!) Join the DCYP Kiwanis Board! Interested in getting more involved with DCYP Kiwanis? Looking to give back to the community while gaining valuable leadership experience? Consider joining the DCYP Kiwanis Board of Directors! As a volunteer-run organization, DCYP Kiwanis seeks highly-motivated and highly-engaged individuals to serve on the 2015-2016 leadership team. Directors serve a variety of functions and carry out all club activities including marketing and communications, and organizing and executing service projects, social events, monthly happy hours and the club's signature special events. Members of DCYP Kiwanis will select the 2015-2016 Board of Directors during Annual Elections Meeting this June. The 2015-2016 president is then responsible for structuring and assigning specific roles for the elected leadership team.
