[NSCoderNightDC] Guess what?

Meeting tonight!!

As per usual the meeting will be held at 7:00p at La Madeleine near the Bethesda Metro station. We usually get kicked out around 10:00pm.

Sadly, while I will be making a cameo tonight, I won't be staying long. Turns out a friend from Honduras is in town and we're going get together with a third friend who also lives here and have a little impromptu class reunion.

Take care,
Jose.

ND ALUMNI SOCCER TEAM 2013

Dear Irish Alums,The ND Alumni Soccer season is here, and we're looking for new players to join us on the pitch this year.  All skill levels are welcome, as we try to play competitively (I mean, we are the "Fighting" Irish), but the most important thing is everyone plays a lot and has a great time kicking the ball around with their fellow alums.

Games are on Sundays from now through June at McKinley Technology High School (T Street NE, Washington, DC).  If you are interested, please e-mail Michael Osysko (michael.e.osysko@gmail.com) right away, so he can add you to the roster before the game this upcoming Sunday.  We have a good core of returning players, but have had some people move over the past year and are in need of some new players, especially females (we could always use more males too, so don't let that deter you in the least, as like I said, everyone gets plenty of p-time). Hope to see you on the field! GO IRISH!

ND ALUMNI SOFTBALL 2013

Lads and Lasses.  The 2013 Capital Alumni Network (CAN) Co-Ed Softball League season is just about to begin.  No seriously, the first game is next Friday, April 19th and our second is April 25th.  Though we have a great core group that has played for several years, we are always looking for new faces who like to play some ball and drink some beverages.  If you have a glove, and/or like drinking beers mid-week, then you qualify!  Boom.  Just like that.  For more information please contact coach Jimmy Mandich '02/'03 MSA at jimmymandich@yahoo.com or Brandon Lenk '06/'07 Arkie (stupid Jimmy with his dual year degrees, I could walk twice too ya know!) at brandonlenk@gmail.com.  Or both of us just to be safe.  Go Irish!

DC YOUNG ADULT THEOLOGY ON TAP SERIES

The Office of Young Adult Ministry is happy to announce the return of Theology on Tap at a *NEW* location at Buffalo Billiards in Dupont Circle! Tuesdays during Easter (May 1 and May 8) all YAs (21-late 30s) are invited for Happy Hour from 6-7pm with a talk and Q/A to follow from 7-8pm. Bring friends and plan to meet some new ones this Spring while learning more about issues like faith and entrepreneurship, the media and the church, and don't miss Cardinal Wuerl talking about his experience in Rome at the conclave! Learn more at Facebook.com/DCYoungAdult or email Jonathan Lewis at yam@adw.org.

ANNUAL WREATH LAYING AT THE TOMB OF THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER 5/26

Sunday, May 26 – 10:15 a.m.
Arlington Cemetery, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

The ND Alumni Club of Washington, DC, is scheduled to place a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers on Sunday, May 26, at 12:15 p.m., in honor of Notre Dame alumni who have personified the words "God, Country, Notre Dame."  Everyone is welcome to join us for the ceremony.  Keep in mind that the Tomb is a 20-minute walk from the Visitor Center, Metro stop, and Parking, so please plan accordingly.  Army protocol calls for four people to accompany our wreath.  Please contact David Diaz '95 at cerritos117@msn.com if you would like to volunteer or to nominate a current or former member of our Armed Services or if you have any questions about the event.  We will meet on the south side of the Amphitheater Building.

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF CO-EDUCATION CELEBRATION 5/1

Jones Day: 51 Louisiana Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001

DC was one of 8 cities selected by the NDAA to host a regional event to celebrate co-education, so please join us for our upcoming celebration on Wed. May 1 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm!  The event will be held at Jones Day (51 Louisiana Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001)

The event will host our guest speaker Anne Thompson '79 as well as a co-education panel including Mary Davey Bliley '72 (ND's very first female graduate), and Steve O'Brien (who served on Fr. Hesburgh's student commission to evaluate the idea of coeducation). Tickets include hors d'oeuvres, dessert, and wine. The event is open to all alumni, students, parents, and friends.

[wapadc] This Is Anthropology website

Dear WAPA members,

At the 2012 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, AAA had the pleasure of announcing the launch of a new website called This Is Anthropology. This Is Anthropology was created for students, parents and the general public to learn more about what anthropology is and what anthropologists do in simple, accessible language.  The site allows anthropologists from around the world to share a photo and a brief "blurb" about their work along with their contact information. Visitors to the site can then enter a location anywhere in the world and find anthropologists who are working in that area.

Though still at the beta stage of development, the site currently includes an overview of the discipline of anthropology, the skills and careers of anthropologists, advice on how to become an anthropologist, and an interactive map displaying anthropology projects in different parts of the world. Visitors to the website will learn about the kinds of jobs anthropologists have, the skill sets we employ, the kinds of research questions we ask, and how anthropologists around the globe are attempting to better understand what it means to be human. We hope this visual display of the work of many and varied anthropologists will convey to visitors the critical thinking, productive approaches to diversity, effective written and oral communication, and technical skills that are central to the work of anthropologists.

We need the profiles of as many anthropologists as possible to demonstrate the breadth and importance of our work!

Before promoting the site to a broader audience, we need our members to add their profile to the map. It's quick and easy to add your information. You can add photos and links, flag your research site on the map, and share information about your research. Simply visit this link: http://www.thisisanthropology.com/index.cfm to share your work with the world!

The site is still a work in progress, so your observations, feedback, and contributions are greatly appreciated. Please take a minute to visit This Is Anthropology, and contact Courtney Dowdall cdowdall@aaanet.org  with your comments.

Thanks,
Courtney

Re: [NSCoderNightDC] recommended hotels for WWDC?

For those that got tickets, are any of you have trouble activating them? I've had the same error for hours.

On Thu, Apr 25, 2013 at 2:11 PM, W. Dana Nuon <wdnuon@gmail.com> wrote:
Like many other people, I had the ticket in my cart and then it *poof*, disappeared after getting a processing error.

Parc 55 was my go-to hotel for SF conferences, having stayed there 8-9 times. You used to be able to get a super cheap rate on Priceline. I got it for $50/night on my first stay, and never paid more than $100/night until around 2008-2009, when it was $130. Since Wyndham bought them, the Priceline deals are more scarce. It's a very nice hotel, even more so since the Wyndham renovations. The $15/day wifi sucks, but you can pay about $50 for weekly access.

Last year I stayed at my friend's condo, but I'm not sure I have that option this year, so I've tentatively booked a room at Hotel Union Square through Apple's CHM. It's in a nice location and is reasonably priced at $169/night. Thought about Hotel Metropolis, but figured it's worth $30/night for a more central location.

Don't neglect to check the hotel offerings from Apple's CHM. A lot of people overlook it. They have great rates and often have rooms when other sites show they're sold out. It's also easy to cancel or transfer a reservation if you find a better deal.

If I am flying 3000 miles to San Francisco I usually stay 9 or 10 days!

I usually fly in the Friday before the conference week and then stay until Sunday the next weekend.

Criteria for conference hotels:

1. Does it have reliable Internet with good bandwidth?  Is it free or an extra nightly charge?

2. Does it have free Wifi Internet in your hotel room?  Can be a $20 daily extra charge.  Some don't have in room wi-fi at all.

3. How close it is to Moscone West?  Closer hotels fill up fast!  Some hotels are a hike, like 12 to 15 blocks away! 15 blocks makes it hard to get to those early morning WWDC sessions on time!

4. Is it in a bad area?   Stay away from the Tenderloin!   Tenderloin hotels are almost like youth hostels!  $90 a night with the conference rate but not worth it!  Shared bathroom in some!

5. Is it part of Apple's Conference hotel rate?  Sometimes almost half off the nightly price?

6. Is there a bar or night club or restaurant attached to the hotel?

7. Does it have a gym or pool?

8.  Does the hotel have a free daily wine or drink tasting?   Can sometimes be good to hit before heading out to conference parties...

With that said,  Last year I stayed at the Clift Hotel ( http://www.clifthotel.com ) which is a bit of a hike from Moscone.  The rooms are like $450 a night but with the conference rate, Apple actually covers $250 of that, so you only pay about $200 a night.  Free Internet, free wifi, gym, night club, etc...

The Redroom Room in the hotel was designed by, Philippe Starck, the same guy that designed Steve Jobs yacht.

Anyway, I hope I get a ticket.  I am not so sure with the pre-announced sign up time!   I can see the registration web site crashing and it being a fiasco.

Re: [NSCoderNightDC] recommended hotels for WWDC?

Like many other people, I had the ticket in my cart and then it *poof*, disappeared after getting a processing error.

Parc 55 was my go-to hotel for SF conferences, having stayed there 8-9 times. You used to be able to get a super cheap rate on Priceline. I got it for $50/night on my first stay, and never paid more than $100/night until around 2008-2009, when it was $130. Since Wyndham bought them, the Priceline deals are more scarce.
