[ND-DC-YA] ND-DC YA News, Gamewatches, and More

*YA NEWS*

We are very sad to see some of our wonderful YA Coordinators - Lourdes Long, Alex Malecki, Meghan Kaler, and Alex Tomala - depart the DC area. We will miss them dearly, even though we know they are moving on to great things. If you have a question or request for the YA group, please feel free to email the Coordinators at dcnotredameyoungalumni@googlegroups.com. If it pertains to housing or membership, you can also reach out directly to Katherine Malkovsky at kmalkovs@gmail.com.

We hope everyone had a wonderful summer! We can't wait to see all of you again as we begin a new Fall season. Go Irish!

*HAPPY HOUR ON AUGUST 23*

Join us for a happy hour at The Science Club, 1136 19th Street NW (close the the Farragut West and Farragut North metro stops), this Thursday, August 23, from 5:30 to 8pm.  Follow signs to the Notre Dame area on the second floor and enjoy drink specials as we reminisce about what it was like to be going "back to school" (while still celebrating being a DC alum)!

*GAMEWATCHES*

Our gamewatches this year will again be held at *The Exchange <http://www.theexchangesaloon.com/>* (1719 G St NW, 3 blocks from the Farragut North and Farragut West metro stops). The Exchange has dedicated TVs and sound throughout the bar, as well as amazing game day specials on food and drinks. For the ND vs Navy game (September 1st, 9 am), they are offering a breakfast bar for $25 dollars ($15/all you can drink OR $25/all you can drink plus breakfast). Come out and support the Irish! We look forward to seeing you there!

*FLAG FOOTBALL*

The leprechaun is practicing his pushups, and the DC ND co-ed flag football team is recruiting for the 2012 season. Games are on weekends throughout the fall, and no commitment, participation fee or prior flag football experience is necessary. Don't miss this opportunity to enjoy the sunshine with some fellow ND grads, and put the Michigan, USC, and Georgetown squads in their place. If you're interested in joining the Flagging Irish this season, email Ryan at remnantrb@gmail.com or John at johndickas@yahoo.com and they'll add you to the email list.

*'EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING' CONFERENCE NOMINATIONS DUE SEPT. 7*

Each year, the DC Club sponsors tuition and pays the expenses for one teacher, principal, or counselor from an area elementary, middle, or high school to attend Notre Dame's on-campus Excellence in Teaching Conference. This year's conference will be held October 26-28.

This year's conference features three workshops designed to provide an understanding of effective learning and how to actively engage students in the learning process. The award-winning conference is open to all teachers and administrators from public, Catholic, and private schools nationwide, not just Notre Dame alumni. It combines practical application and inspiration to empower educators to change emotionally, intellectually, and psychologically. The conference challenges educators to move beyond teaching as a profession to teaching as a calling. It motivates educators to teach outside the box, and to achieve a learning experience filled with rigor, relevance, and relationship. Finally, the workshops address outside influences that affect learning in the classroom and provide management tools to educate students on conflict resolution skills.

For more information, go to the University Alumni Association website at alumni.nd.edu/eit.

If you would like to nominate a teacher or have any questions, please send a letter of recommendation to, or contact, *JenniferRawert '89* at jennifer.rawert.89@gmail.com. All nominations must be received by September 7 to be considered.

· Four women (including an ND alum) are looking for one or two housemates in Arlington. Our large town home is located a short walk from the Courthouse and Clarendon metros, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, restaurants, shopping in downtown Clarendon and is a short drive to St. Agnes. The townhouse is only a few years old and is gorgeous! There are four floors three and a half bathrooms, a large kitchen with granite counter tops, washer and dryer, pool and concierge that receives packages and provides 24-hour maintenance. The open room is the master suite and is the entire second floor. It has a large walk-in closet and a very spacious bathroom (two sinks, separate washroom, granite countertops, large Jacuzzi tub and separate walk-in shower). We like to entertain and are very easy going. The rent for the master suite is $1,850.00 ($925/person if shared) a month plus approximately $80/person/month for cleaning and utilities (we all pitch in on a cleaning service), and $85-$100 for underground parking (parking is optional but street parking is limited and first come first served).
