All,
I hope that everyone had a great 4th of July holiday, and that you've been able to keep cool through this long heat wave. There is a LOT going on right now in NoMa & Near Northeast, and I've provided a little update below. Please let me know if you have any questions!
Thanks,
Tony Goodman, ANC 6C04
Upcoming Meetings:
* PSA 102 (the Police Service Area for most of Near Northeast) will have its monthly meeting on Tuesday 7/10, 7pm at Sherwood Rec Center. This is an excellent opportunity to speak directly with the MPD officers working in our neighborhood.
* ANC 6C has its monthly meeting on Wednesday 7/11, 7pm at 214 Mass Ave NE. The agenda includes a few NoMa/Near Northeast items, such as new apartment buildings at 1005 North Capitol Street NE and 60 L Street NE. For more information, see www.anc6c.org.
Art & Parks:
* Sometime later this summer, we should know whether NoMa will be getting park funding this year. Tommy Wells has been doing a GREAT job behind the scenes lobbying his fellow Councilmembers, but at this point It all depends on whether (1) the revenue estimate is revised upwards by DC's CFO & (2) new Chairman Mendelson keeping NoMa parks as a priority on the budget list. Phil Mendelson has been a strong supporter of parks in the past, so any positive, friendly emails his way could help to keep our neighborhood on his radar.
* Oasis Market, at 3rd & M, was selected by the Murals DC program to receive a splash of art on its M Street side. In addition, NoMa BID will be helping to landscape the area adjacent to their sidewalk to help highlight this new public art. The first (of several) public meetings on this project will be on Monday, July 16th at 14th & U NW. I'll email out more details (like the time!) as they become available. They've already picked the least artist: NYC-based Pose 2.
Retail News:
* Zuppa Fresca has closed at 250 K Street NE. The property owner is now TIAA-CREF, and they are actively working on finding someone new for the space.
* West Wing Cafe is hoping to open next month at 1100 First Street. They will be open 7 days a week, until 9 pm, with sandwiches, sushi, beer & sake.
* A new Indian restaurant has just signed a lease in the ground floor of the Courtyard Marriott, at 2nd & Florida. They are hoping to open in October.
* Union Market - the replacement for the old Farmers Market building at 5th & Neal, is opening in September.
Construction Updates:
* The new apartment building at 1st & M by Archstone now has several dozen residents, with over 100 signed leases so far. There will be a coffee shop in one of its retail spaces, and potentially a wine bar or other small restaurant in the other (both at the North end of the building).
* Construction continues all around the neighborhood, as the upcoming apartments at 360 H (with a new Giant), 300 L (condos), 318 Eye & 140 M have all "topped out," meaning they've reached their final height, and the exterior finishes are starting to go up. Meanwhile, the new apartments at 2 M & 60 L are both rising fast, at 3 & 5 stories so far, respectively. All together, this adds up to around 1500 apartments & condos under construction in Near Northeast & NoMa.* Three office buildings are also under construction in NoMa: 175 N (Constitution Square), 1050 First, and 1111 North Cap (NPR). 175 N & 1050 First will both have ground floor retail. NPR won't have any, but they will have a small plaza on the corner, and some public exhibition and event space.
Utility Upgrades:
* Despite the heat, you may have noticed that the power didn't go out as frequently this Summer in Near Northeast. Pepco completed a major upgrade of our neighborhood's main electrical feeders a few months ago, which has finally provided us with sufficient capacity to keep up with all of the AC units blasting throughout the neighborhood.
* First Street NE, from K to N, will be completely torn apart over and rebuilt over the next couple years, starting in September. This project will bring upgraded sidewalks, lighting, and a new cycletrack from M down to Mass Ave.
* Preliminary design work has started to widen the sidewalks on Florida Avenue by reducing the traffic lanes from 6 to 4. A BIG "thank you" is deserved for Tommy Wells and his staff, who have pushed strongly for this project. Construction won't be starting for a while, but of course this will be a very exciting project, and there will be many opportunities for the neighborhood to participate in this process.
Sorry for the long update, but there's a lot going on right now! I hope that everyone is having a great Summer!
Thank you,
Tony Goodman
