[wapadc] Value of Social Science Research March 5 Koshland 6:30pm

Please join the AAAS Social Science Affinity Group for its next event – a roundtable discussion on "What is the value of the social science research?"

Who: AAAS Fellows, DC area social scientists, and anyone interested in learning more about this topic
Where: Koshland Science Museum, 525 E. St. NW, Washington, DC 22201
When: Wednesday, March 5 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Although the percentage of federal R&D dollars spent on social science research is a small fraction of total federal R&D, policy makers and the public alike periodically question the value of federal funding for social science research. Calls for defunding social science research at the NSF and for scrutiny of social science research portfolios at various government agencies have occurred repeatedly for over 60 years. Most recently this was reflected by the passage in 2013 of the Coburn Amendment, which restricted the funding for NSF-sponsored projects in political science to only those that promote U.S. national security or economic interests.

This roundtable will provide an overview of the history of challenges to federal funding of social science research, review some of the key concerns raised in the recent wave of criticism, and consider how social scientists and their allies in the humanities and the sciences can make a more compelling case for the value of social science research. Today social science research is undergoing a renaissance as it is being drawn closer to many of the other sciences and playing a crucial role in the big data revolution. Yet forming a unified message about social science remains challenging given the wide range of disciplines and methodologies used. And unlike many of the other sciences, the value of the social sciences can often not be measured in terms of inventions, patents, widgets, and financial profitability.

At this roundtable, we'll develop a deeper understanding of the current critique of social science research and brainstorm ways to convey the value of social science research to policy makers and the public. We are particularly interested in thinking about how to highlight the role of social science research in safeguarding our democratic institutions, bolstering our nation's national security, in strengthening our foreign relations, in supporting the work of our military, in fostering our economic prosperity, and in ensuring the health and well-being of our citizens. Bring your questions, thoughts, and ideas, and join us for a lively, interactive discussion.

In providing these services, AIP seeks to provide both the volunteer team and the senior with a safe, positive, fun, and meaningful experience. Re: [NSCoderNightDC] In-App Purchase Receipt Validation

I decided that I didn't want to bother trying to prevent piracy and did the most simple check possible, on-device, then set a boolean in NSUserDefaults on purchase / purchase restore. You don't need any external libraries for this basic case, StoreKit gives you enough. This case should be pretty easy, you can just copy/paste code. The hardest part of this is remember to check all the right boxes on iTunesConnect so the IAP actually goes live.

It only gets complex when you try to incorporate 3rd-party authentication, where there's communication between iTunes / the App / Your servers. In that case, all the custom JSON parsing / encryption / etc. comes into play. I don't think you need it if you're validating purchases on the phone only.

Hey,

I'm wondering if any of you have experience implementing in-app purchase for a non-consumable. I have several questions about the mechanics - like:

- How did you handle the differences in the receipt process so you can support iOS 6 and 7?

- Did you use a third party library to handle the decryption, signature verification, and JSON parsing?

- Local or Server validation? Your server or direct to Apple?

- How often do you check the receipt? Every time you launch? Once?

- How did you store the "success" result in a way that prevents tampering?

Thanks for your insight.

[ND-DC-YA] ND-DC-YA Winterfest: REGISTER Flip Cup Team by Thurs 2/27

Good morning YA’s,

This year's Winter Olympics seem tame compared to our 2014 Winterfest Flip Cup Tournament this week! We wanted to send a quick reminder on one of our most important events - the Annual Winterfest is happening this Friday, February 28. Not only is it a chance to catch up with other YAs but it also helps to raise money for the Notre Dame chapter of DC Scholarship Fund.

Please register your Flip Cup teams by 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014.

  • To register to play, please email dcnotredameyoungalumni@googlegroups.com with your team name and a list of five team members.  Both ND alumni and fans are welcome to play - you just need at least one ND alum to register your team.

And even if you're not on a team - we still hope you can join the party!

See you Friday, Feb. 28, at 8:30 p.m. at McFadden's (2401 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20037)!

Reminders:

  • There will be an open bar serving beer only from 8:30-11:30 pm.   To participate in the open bar, it's $25 per person if you're on a team, $20 for everyone else.

  • All flip cup teams should arrive prior to the games commencing at 9 PM.  Prizes will be given to the winning team.

Go Irish!

[tfctoastmasters:521] thank you

Dear Talk For Change Members,

Thank you for your kind words and warm send-off for me at our meeting on Feb. 19. I’ve been hosting the TFC club in APPA’s conference room for nearly three years and have enjoyed every moment I’ve spent with the group. Toastmasters kind of fell into my lap because the TFC club needed a place to meet, APPA had a place, and--among APPA staff members--I had the flexibility to stay after work a couple nights a month. I’m happy to have had the opportunity to learn about the Toastmasters organization—clearly I should have become involved in it decades ago.  But, be assured I will be an evangelist for Toastmasters going forward because I’ve experienced first-hand how it helps us become better speakers and better leaders.  I’ve learned a lot from all of your speeches and I learned a lot from preparing my speeches.

Thank you, too, for the Container Store gift certificate.  Getting my house more organized is at the top of my retirement plans, so nothing could be more perfect.

The best part of Talk For Change has been the new friends I’ve made.  While I’m leaving my job, I’m not leaving the universe — and I’m not even leaving the DC area.  So, please stay in touch.  My home email is jeanne.labella@gmail.com.

I wish great success to the club and success and happiness to all of you, TFC’s wonderful members.

Warm regards,

Jeanne

[ND-DC-YA] ND-DC-YA Open House this Saturday

Hello Everyone,

I'm sending this out separate from the weekly housing email because of an open house opportunity this Saturday.  Please see the description below from Paul Leuck ('10) (pleuck10@gmail.com).

Basement room with private bath available March 1st in 4 bedroom townhouse in Tenleytown. The house is located 3 blocks from Tenleytown/AU metro station (Red line), 1 block from the bus stop and has on street parking available at all times. It's also within walking distance to several grocery stores (Whole Foods, Safeway), convenience stores, retail stores and multiple dining options (Z-Burger, Chipotle, CavaMeze, Guapo's, etc..). The room iis fairly large (roughly 14ft x 13ft.). It has a private bathroom with shower. Rent is $805 plus utilities (~$80, includes cable, internet, water, gas, power). Current roommates include 3 young professionals (2 are ND '10) in mid-to-late twenties.

We are having an open house on Saturday February 22nd, from 2pm to 4pm. If interested, please e-mail with a couple lines about yourself and we'll let you know the address so you can come by and check it out.

Thanks,
Jeff Gonzales
