Talk for Change
Meeting Notes
November 4, 2015
The meeting started with an agenda review by opening of meeting by Mark Wills as TMOE. In attendance were members Mark Wills, Lennette Ward, Katie Walter, Beth Blair, Lynnie Moore, Kristen Sullens, and Laura Zam. Two guests were also at the meeting: David Schupak (who had visited the club before) and his friend Khalil Jarrett.
- After an introduction by Mark, Beth Blair did her talk, which was Speech #2 in the Competent Communication manual, "Organize Your Speech." Her speech, entitled "Horror Movies: More Than Just A Good Scare" went very well. Beth seemed confident and conversational. She also taught us all a lot about horror flicks, piquing an interest in these films for many members.
- Next Mark introduced the second speaker of the evening, Katie Walter. Her speech was the first one in The Entertaining Speaker manual: "The Entertaining Speech." The title of Katie's speech was "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas." It was a delightful—and entertaining—talk about her love of Christmas decorating and other traditions.
- The next phase of the meeting was devoted to Table Topics, which was led by Mark. The theme for this was "confidence," and Mark posed several thought-provoking questions. Lynnie, David, Khalil, Lennette and Laura all fielded Mark's questions.
- After Table Topics, Mark introduced the General Evaluator for the evening, who was Laura. As this was her first time taking on this role, she was a little shaky in the beginning, but soon figured out her responsibilities.
- Laura next invited Lynnie to the lectern, since she had agreed to evaluate the speeches of both Beth and Katie. Lynnie did an excellent job capturing what was very effective in both speeches as well as where there might be room for growth.
- Next was the timer report given by Lennette. Originally, Mark was scheduled to take on this role, but Lennette, graciously agreed to take it on instead since Mark had so many other roles in that meeting. She did a terrific job of recording and reporting upon times.
- The Grammarian Report was next, given by Kristen, who not only counted filler words but also did an excellent job commenting on interesting and effective expressiveness in both speakers.
- At this point in the meeting, Laura gave the General Evaluator report, noting how well the meeting was going. She was especially pleased with the caliber of both speeches and all the useful ideas about confidence that had been shared.
- As TMOE, Mark summed up the meeting and then switched to his hat as President. In this capacity, he talked about roles that needed to be filled for the next meeting on November 18. He also discussed several upcoming events in the New Year: an Open House on January 20 and some Toastmaster contests in February. He then closed the meeting.
