There's also a second speech slot open if anyone feels inspired.

[wapadc] Things to do at AAA Denver

Hi folks:

(Sorry for cross postings)

Some of you will be going to AAA, so please look for WAPA folks in several activities.

First, plan to attend the Praxis Award ceremony on Friday night. This follows the NAPA Business meeting, which starts at 7:45; Praxis should be at about 8:30 pm.

Two things that would be very helpful to me is for you to attend the mid-career roundtable on Wednesday:
#2-0350: CURRENT ISSUES FOR MID-CAREER PRACTITIONERS

Wednesday, November 18, 2015: 2:00 PM-3:45 PM
Agate (Hyatt Regency)

This will be coordinated by Laurie Krieger and me, and will cover issues and concerns experienced by practitioners who are past grad school but still too young to retire. Most folks won't be on site at that time but if you are, please thing about stopping in.

Second, there will be a special video installation that I hope you will visit:
#3-1035: PRACTITIONER BEGINNINGS: HOW I GOT MY JOB OUTSIDE THE ACADEMY
Thursday, November 19, 2015: 1:45 PM-3:30 PM
Mineral Hall C (Hyatt Regency)

We will be videotaping passersby about how they got their first jobs outside of academic settings. There is no schedule, which is dicey, but hopefully it will work if enough folks come in to be interviewed on camera.
Carol Ellick and I will be conducting this.

Other events include the Friday Career Fair, a Saturday night reception for the NAPA mentoring program, and more. Please look through your on site program and support your fellow WAPistas.

Don't forget to dress warmly!

cheers,
terry

ARCHBISHOP CARROLL HIGH SCHOOL FOOD DRIVE (Saturday, 11/14)

Join the ND Club in volunteering at Archbishop Carroll High School's Food Drive.  Archbishop Carroll, where several teachers and graduates from Notre Dame's ACE program currently serve, commits to serving 300 families in the DC area. Each family in need who signs up will receive a full Thanksgiving dinner, turkey, and many other food staples to keep their pantry full after the holiday.

The group will volunteer on Saturday, November 14, both in helping drive around and pick up donations, and sorting the donations at the school.  We are looking for volunteers for several shifts throughout the day:  9-12, 11-2, and 2-5.  Families welcome!  Please contact MaryKate Robinson (marykate@alumni.nd.edu) if you are interesting in volunteering - and if you are willing to drive to pick up the donations.  Thanks!

MERCY IN THE CITY BOOK DISCUSSION (Wednesday, 12/2)

Kick off the Advent season by joining the ND DC Young Alumni in discussing "Mercy in the City" by Kerry Weber!

"Mercy in the City" is a young Catholic woman's story of her efforts to live out the Works of Mercy in the busy and bustling New York City. It's a short read (under 150 pages), and can easily be purchased online or at most bookstores for $10-13. This will be a great way to begin the Year of Mercy and the Advent season!

BETTER OFF BOWLING

Looking for some alum sports fun over the Fall?

Better Off Bowling is a co-ed social bowling league for young professionals that run two separate leagues, one on Sunday afternoons AND another on Tuesday evenings during the Fall (and yes, the NFL games are on the big screen TVs).  They have a bunch of young professionals along with a number of other school alum groups and usually have ~400 fun social people in the league.  They've contacted us hoping we would be interested in getting a team or two together (does not have to be all alums though).  Registration ends mid October, and the league starts rolling Oct 11thfor the Sunday league and Oct 13th for the Tuesday night league!
