Re: [NSCoderNightDC] Analytics tools

Flurry's always been my goto suggestion for clients.  The key is to figure out what points in your app you want to analyze.

Re: [NSCoderNightDC] Autolayout help

Thanks for the replies. I'll try and get to Le Madeleine next Tuesday, although Tuesday's tend to be problematic for me.

@Jose, thanks for the link to the stuff from John Williams.  I'll take a look at it today. I hear you about Xcode 4 vs 5. After trying with Xcode 4 I swore I would never have anything to do with Auto Layout. Then I read lots of blog posts about how everything was so much better in 5. I even (successfully) tried building a couple of simple things and thought, "aha! they're right" Then for the last few months I've been working on projects with pretty trivial layout.

Jon August suggested I give more details. So here are details galore. Feel free to skip and do something more interesting with your lives. Like root canal.

- Although the layout I'm trying to achieve is pretty simple, I haven't tried the springs and struts approach because I need to support iOS 6 and 7, and I read in a couple of places that suggest I want to tie things to the top and bottom layout guides.

- The overall context for the app is a UITabBarController

- The layout for this particular view has two subviews: a web view and a custom view, which I'll refer to as a widget view. Both of these subviews should stretch across the whole screen

- The widget view should be 50 pixels high and should hug the tab bar. The existing version of the app was built many moons ago (and several versions of both Xcode and the SDK ago), so when I went and built it against the newest SDK I find that the widget view is disappearing under the tab bar.

- The web view should fill up the remaining vertical space. Ideally, I'd like to move it down from under the status bar. But that can come later.

- My approach is as follows:

1. Set the following constraints on the widget view: height 50, 0 px vertical spacing between it and the bottom layout guide, 0 px horizontal leading spacing between it and its superview, 0 px horizontal trailing spacing between it and its superview.

At this point, Xcode usually is complaining that the constraints on the widget view are ambiguous. Usually something along the lines of need to specify the y position. Probably not surprising, but the specific warnings vary depending on what order I specify the constraints. I have deleted all the constraints and tried rebuilding using several different approaches.

2. Set the following constraints on the web view: same width as widget view, 0 px vertical spacing between it and the widget view, 0 px vertical spacing between it and the top layout guide (although very often Xcode resets this as something like -290 px between the top layer guide and the _bottom_ of my web view (as best I can tell)

3. At this point, I look at the warnings and errors Xcode is displaying and try tweaking and adjusting. Eventually, my blood pressure shoots through the roof and I step away from the keyboard for a while.

Anyway, thanks again everyone!

Matt

Re: [NSCoderNightDC] Autolayout help

Yeah, auto-layout’s fun, once you get the hang of it. There are times you’ll want to tear out your hair while you’re trying to figure out how to get to get things to behave just how you want and there are some rough edges. Once you’re confident with it, it’ll greatly simplify layouts that previously would’ve driven you nuts - particularly anything where the layout’s content-driven. (Seriously, I think about the time I spent writing dynamic layout code pre-autolayout and I kind of want to cry.)

Just something that helped me quite a bit was selecting the views you want to set up constraints for in the Document Outline (the list of all the views on the left) and then applying the constraints using the Editor menu option at the top.  I almost never apply the constraints by clicking on the actual views or by using the icons on the bottom right - that seems to be a recipe for disaster.

Also, getting things to move those last few pixels or correcting a <= to = should be done on the right in the size inspector for the constraint itself.  Also, if you’re getting orange lines, it means something is still ambiguous.  In those cases, make sure you’ve defined the width, x and y constraints.  A lot of times you can get away with not defining any constraints - just check that it works in multiple screen dimensions...

Also, don’t be afraid to delete all the constraints and start again.

If you give us some more detail on what’s giving you grief, maybe we can help more.

[NSCoderNightDC] CocoaConf DC early registration ends tomorrow

Hey everyone,

I thought I'd remind everybody that CocoaConf DC is happening March 28th and 29th this year, and early registration ends tomorrow. If you can't make it out to Bethesda on Tuesdays like me it might be a good way to catch up with everyone.

[wapadc] What would you recommend?

Good morning group.

I am interested in finding out from WAPA members about what people look for in an employee, i.e. what knowledge and skills do you wish they possessed that they do not learn in school.

If you do not hire employees, what do you wish you’d learned prior to entering the field of anthropology or before entering a field where you put your anthropological skills to use.

The reason I am interested is that I will be teaching an 1-week intensive anthropology career bootcamp this summer for the University of Maryland Department of Anthropology.  The course is based on one I taught at the University of New Mexico and the book that my husband and I wrote “The Anthropology Graduate’s Guide: From Student to a Career.”  Both the class and the book focus more on the mechanics of looking for and applying for jobs and what I want to add this summer are more actual job skills like writing, interviewing, budgeting, proposal writing, and planning.  Since the course is 4-field and I am an archaeologist and educator, recommendations to round out the other areas of anthropology would be appreciated.

The other component of the course is a 6-week internship.  If anyone can sponsor a student, please let me know off-list @ cjellick@um.edu.

THANKS for your help.  I look forward to the conversation.

Carol

Sadly, I don't get to do any of the acronym meetings tonight. Annual condo meeting. Lots of complaining, no one willing to do anything. Pour out a pastry for me, ok?
