Upcoming Events

Gifts for the Homeless Clothing Drive
Where: Warehouse- Use D Street Entrance (1201 Maryland Ave SW)
When: Saturday, December 7, 8:30am - 12:30pm
Metro: Smithsonian (Blue / Orange)

The annual Gifts for the Homeless clothing drive provides much-needed clothing for men, women, and children at over 70 DC-area shelters. Gathering at a large warehouse for a fun clothing-sorting party, DCYP will join hundreds of other volunteers to assist in sorting and bagging clothing donations. The event is always a favorite project of DCYP members! If you have clothing you would like to donate, feel free to bring it to the project! To sign up or learn more, contact dcyp.service@gmail.com.

Food & Friends
Where: Food & Friends (219 Riggs Road Washington DC 20000)
When: Monday, December 16, 6:00 - 8:00pm
Metro: Fort Totten (Green / YellowRed)

Join us this holiday season to volunteer at Food & Friends! The Food & Friends kitchen and grocery pantry prepares more than 3,000 meals each day, so it takes many helping hands to make sure all the food is prepped, portioned and packaged correctly. The kitchen is a fun, hands-on atmosphere where we will be preparing and bagging meals for their daily delivery to people living with life-challenging illnesses. Volunteers are asked to arrive promptly at 6pm.
To sign up to volunteer, email dcyp.service@gmail.com.

Eliminate Update

Happy Holidays! After all the shopping, and giving thanks for what you do have, it doesn't stop there. Tuesday, December 3 is National Giving Day or "Giving Tuesday." It is a great chance to donate before the end of the year! We've been doing a great job with fundraising to achieve the worldwide goal of eliminating MNT [Maternal Neonatal Tetanus]. There are 26 countries left! See for yourself which countries are left.
With your financial help [It is only $1.80 per shot] we can continue to grow our club's contribution and aim to be one of the top fundraising clubs in our Kiwanis district! The best way to do that is donate at least $5. Then tell your friends and family about Giving Tuesday and to send them to the Eliminate Donation Page to make a contribution to our club!
I am here if there are any questions or ideas on how to save mothers from the pain of losing their newborns and those children missing out on the chance to live life.

Zaakirah Muhammad
DCYP Eliminate Coordinator

[wapadc] Subject: CDC Leaders in Environmental Health - Summer 2014 Internship

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): Collegiate Leaders in Environmental Health Summer Internship Program
This is a 10-week summer 2014 environmental internship for undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Ecology, or related fields who are passionate about the environment, about human health, and about the link between the two. The National Deadline to apply is Wednesday, January 29, 2014.

For more information and for assistance with your application contact: National Scholarships Office – scholarships@umd.edu

Who Can Apply: US Citizens or Permanent Resident with a green card – rising junior or senior – 3.0+ GPA – an academic major or demonstrated coursework concentration in environmental studies or related fields

Description: This is a 10-week summer environmental internship for undergraduate students majoring in Environmental Studies, Environmental Engineering, Ecology, or related fields who are passionate about the environment, about human health, and about the link between the two. A healthy environment should be capable of sustaining a healthy population; however, with 6.3 billion people on the earth, there is a need for more sustainable interactions between humans and the environment. Harmful environments can increase the risk of many health conditions. Healthy environments, on the other hand, can promote good health in many ways—protecting people from toxic exposures, providing safe water and clean air, and encouraging healthy behaviors such as outdoor recreation. Environmental health is the discipline that focuses on the interrelationships between people and their environment, promotes human health and well-being, and fosters safe and healthy living. This branch of public health is concerned with all aspects of the natural and built environment that may affect human health.

Interns will be placed in environmental health programs at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC): National Center for Environmental Health/Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (NCEH/ATSDR). Over the course of the summer, interns will be exposed to a broad overview of environmental public health issues at the federal level.

Interns will participate in environmental health projects, interact with federal officials and scientists, and visit important environmental health sites in Atlanta. Other activities may include "brown-bag" lunches with CDC staff, as well as attending lectures from important environmental health leaders in the Atlanta area. In addition, interns will be able to attend the many seminars offered by CDC during the summer.

CDC has partnered with The Department of Energy (DOE)/Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) to implement the Program. CDC will review applications and make final award selections.

Award Amount:  The internship program will provide a stipend for living expenses ($500 per week). Travel to Atlanta will be the student's responsibility. Potential housing options will be provided in advance; however the interns will be expected to make their own arrangements.

Duration: 10 weeks during the summer - June, 2014 to August, 2014 (Dates TBD)

National Deadline:  Wednesday, January 29, 2014
