[anc6c04] Re: SUPPORT PARKS: Letter Writing Campaign to Mayor Vincent Gray!

Neighbors,

Please take the time to email Mayor Gray as his team finalizes the FY 2014 to let them know about how important parks are for the future of the NoMa & Near Northeast neighborhoods.

As a reminder, the Mayor has been extremely supportive in the past, by (among other actions) allocating nearly $500,000 last year for parks planning, and proposing $18 million for parks construction which did not make it through the process.  Be sure to thank him for his past support!

If you have friends and family who visit the neighborhood and would use parks in the area, please have them email too (for example, out-of-town grandparents who are concerned about outdoor space for their DC-resident grandchildren).  Rachel has provided a template, but feel free to send a more personal note instead.
Thanks so much!

p.s. If you can, cc or bcc me, Rachel, Tommy Wells or others so we can track these emails as well.

Neighbors,
The Mayor's office is finalizing their 2014 budget proposal now. Please write a letter supporting funding for NoMa parks using the sample text below and send it via email to eom@dc.gov. You may find more information about the letter writing campaign and the NoMa Public Realm Design Plan at http://www.nomabid.org/parks/

SAMPLE TEXT:

Dear Mayor Gray,

NoMa/Near Northeast is one of the fastest developing areas in the country, but one critical element has been overlooked: there are no public park spaces in our neighborhood. There is not a single playground, dog run, or other type of public park or gathering space. For the past several years, many private landowners have generously allowed use of their land for dog walking, movie nights, farmers' markets and other uses, but these sites are rapidly disappearing as development continues. Most importantly, there are thousands of children and tens of thousands of people living in this area NOW, and we have no significant parks or public spaces for gathering or recreation!  In order for this neighborhood to reach its full potential, we need parks and public gathering places.

We, the residents, workers and friends of NoMa and Near Northeast request that funding be added to the DC budget for park land acquisition and development. Public parks are essential for our health and safety, and are also necessary to foster a sense of community in our neighborhood. We appreciate everything that the Mayor and the DC Council have been doing to support our neighborhood; we look forward to your assistance in this important matter.  With support and input from the community, NoMa BID has developed a Public Realm Design Plan to inform the design and creation of future parks in the neighborhood. The time to act is now.

Thank you for your consideration.

Best,
