[wapadc] Fwd: Upcoming Internships at A Wider Circle

Hello from A Wider Circle!

Zero percent.  That was the percentage of second-graders that read at grade level last year at one low-income school in Washington, D.C.  As that group of students moved into third grade in the fall of 2012, A Wider Circle formed a partnership with the school to make that class the focus of our School Community Program.  We work with children in that classroom every day, and our goal is clear: to bring the percentage of children who can read at grade level from zero to 100%.

Third grade is a critical year, marking the transition of a student from learning to read to reading to learn. Too often, students who test below proficiency level in reading at the end of third grade fall further and further behind in subsequent grades; this increases the likelihood for behavioral problems and school dropout.

An internship in this new and ambitious program is a hands-on, meaningful, and challenging opportunity for those interested in helping underserved students to grow and succeed.

For more information on this internship, please contact Dr. Anne Thompson at intern@awidercircle.org

You may also email me with any questions; a flier is attached.

Thank you so much for your time,

[NSCoderNightDC] Sadly, no meeting tonight.

I just tried calling La Madeleine, and I could get anyone there. I'm not sure if they are open or not. Either way, I think it's probably safe to say tonight is not a good night for an NSCN meeting. So sadly, Sandy won this round. See you all next week.

Mayor Gray Outlines District's Hurricane Sandy Recovery

D.C. Public Schools & D.C. Government to Be Open Tomorrow; Mayor Says D.C. Has Fared Well and Thoughts and Prayers Are with People in New York and New Jersey

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – Mayor Vincent C. Gray today said the District had weathered Hurricane Sandy well and that officials from the District government and utility and transit partners were striving to get the city back in working order in time to return to regular business Wednesday morning.

Mayor Gray updated members of the media on the District's recovery from the storm after a tour of damage that took him across the city.

"Before Hurricane Sandy struck, I said the District government was ready to meet this challenge – and over the last few days, we proved that," Mayor Gray said. "I want to thank the government workers and private partners who were on the job before and during the storm, and those who will continue working hard during this recovery period to return everything to normal and get the District back to business as usual. I also want to thank our residents for heeding our warnings to stay inside during the worst of the storm, and we appreciate their patience as we get the District back up and running in its aftermath."

As of noon, the most severe part of the storm had passed the Washington region, with rain subsiding through the remainder of Tuesday.  Winds that may gust up to 40 mph are expected to continue through this evening.

District officials and federal, regional and utility partners will continue to work together to ensure the District's residents, businesses and infrastructure are operational after the storm.

"We do remain vigilant of the threat posed by flooding on the Potomac River and its tributaries caused by the heavy rainfall and snowfall Sandy has produced across our region," Mayor Gray said. "The Potomac may crest late tomorrow evening well above flood stage, and we will continue monitoring the situation and making preparations to mitigate the effects of any river flooding."

Updates:

·        The D.C. government and D.C. Public Schools will be open on time tomorrow, with the possible exception of a handful of facilities that may not have their power restored.

·        Pepco is presently reporting just over 2,000 customers affected by power outages in the District. The highest concentrations of outages are in Wards 3, 4, 5 and 7.

·        President Obama has signed a presidential disaster declaration for the District, which provides federal assistance to help the city defray the extra costs the storm will impose.

·        A list of shelters is available on the D.C. Government's Hurricane Sandy website<http://hsema.dc.gov/page/hurricane-sandy>. The shelters provide for basic human needs for those exposed to dangerous conditions or in the event homes are not habitable. Shelters provide cots, blankets and water. Shelters are anticipated to be open through Tuesday night.

·        DPW tow trucks will be deployed as necessary to remove vehicles blocking roadways.

·        Intersections: As of 11:00 a.m., DDOT reported that only two traffic signals (at North Capitol Street and Fort Drive and Harewood Road and Clermont Drive) were out. DDOT traffic control officers will be deployed to direct traffic where necessary.

·        All intersections with traffic signals in-flash have been restored.

·        As of 11:00 a.m., there were 236 trees reported down in the District. Of those, DDOT reported 21 had been resolved and that DDOT crews were working on 215 more.

·        DDOT reports the following minor incidents and street closures:

o   3900 block of Martin Luther King Avenue is blocked from Atlantic Street to Xenia Street, SE in both directions due to low-hanging wires.

o   28th & R Street SE. 28th Street is closed in both directions due to a tree in the roadway. R St is open

o   Sheriff Road is blocked at 51st Street due to a down tree

o   1652 Fort Davis Drive: Cleared. Roadways are open

Subject: Flood Warning / Sandy Update

**Citizens are strongly urged not to drive between now and tomorrow morning. Driving will be unsafe. Please leave the roads clear for emergency responders**

The strongest portion of the storm is coming in now. Sustained winds of 30-50 MPH with gusts of 60 MPH are expected shortly, and are forecast to peak in the early morning hours.

The National Weather Service has continued the Flood Warning and the High Wind Warning for D.C.

Rainfall of 3-5 inches has already fallen in the area, and steady rain continues to fall. Streams and Rock Creek have already crossed their flood stages. Moderate to heavy rain is expected to persist through the remainder of the overnight and into tomorrow morning..

Additionally, those citizens with low-lying interests near the Potomac River, or who normally drive low-lying routes near the river), should note that Potomac River flooding is likely to begin in the next day or two. NWS has issued a statement that says:

"RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES ALONG THE POTOMAC RIVER FROM HANCOCK
DOWNSTREAM TO AND INCLUDING WASHINGTON DC SHOULD PREPARE FOR A
FLOOD NOT SEEN SINCE THE FLOODS OF 1996. THE ONLY LIMITING
FACTOR IN NOT REACHING THE AGNES FLOOD OF 1972 IS THE LIMITING
CONTRIBUTION OF THE SHENANDOAH RIVER FOR THIS EVENT...AS THE
GREATEST RAINFALL HAS FALLEN NORTH OF THE SHENANDOAH BASIN."

Subject: Metro Service Suspended

In light of updated forecast information from the National Weather Service projecting higher wind speeds, as well as the closure of Federal Government offices in the Washington area and the possibility of widespread commercial power outages, Metro has announced the following service changes for Monday, October 29, 2012:

   •  The Metrorail system will be closed on Monday. Rail service on Sunday night will continue operate as scheduled until its normal closing time (midnight). No decision has yet been made on when Metrorail service will be restored after Monday.

   •  All Metrobus service will be suspended as of the end of the service day on Sunday and remain suspended until further notice.

   •  All MetroAccess service has been cancelled on Monday.

Metro service will only be restored when it is safe to do so. Following the storm, Metro personnel will need to perform a comprehensive damage assessment, including inspections of track, bridges, aerial structures, stations and facilities. Service restoration also will be contingent on adequate commercial power to support operations and repair of any storm-related damage.

All,

I apologize that I read this press release wrong - it looks like only
BULK trash pickup is cancelled for Monday. However, there will
certainly be other updates coming over the weekend from DPW and
others, which I will be sure to pass on.

Thanks!

[anc6c04] Fwd: [CHNNA:] DC Government Agencies Prepping for Sandy

All,

Please see below for a storm update, and note in particular that
Monday trash collection is CANCELLED for 10/29. DPW will send out an
update later with the next time for trash & recycling pickup in our
neighborhood.

Be careful and be safe with this upcoming storm! The most important
thing that you can do to help prevent flooding on your street and
house is to collect and bag leaves from your yard, sidewalk, and
gutters.

Thank you,
Tony Goodman

DC GOVERNMENT PREPARES FOR HURRICANE SANDY BY CLEARING STORM DRAINS,
DISTRIBUTING SANDBAGS, GEARING UP TO REMOVE DEBRIS Multiple agencies
will work through the weekend to meet the storm's challenge.

(Washington, DC) The DC Department of Public Works is coordinating
the District government's advance preparations to respond to Hurricane
Sandy, which is expected to produce heavy rainfall and strong winds
when it reaches the mid-Atlantic Sunday night. Flooding also is
possible. Meteorologists are predicting 4" to 8" of rain to fall
between Sunday night and Wednesday with bursts of rain falling 2" per
hour. Tropical storm force winds of 20-30 mph with gusts of 40 to 50
mph also are predicted.

"DC government agencies are implementing their operational plans to
meet the hurricane," said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr. "DC
Water already is clearing storm drains citywide. DPW will distribute
sandbags Saturday, October 27 only between 10 am and 6 pm at RFK
Stadium, Lot 7. Additionally, the District Department of
Transportation is assigning staff and contractors to be ready to
collect storm debris starting Monday, October 29 and DPW crews with
assist."

DPW tow trucks will be deployed as necessary to remove vehicles
blocking roadways. DDOT has generators in place at major
intersections. If power is disrupted, traffic signals will continue
to work, and DDOT traffic control officers will be deployed to direct
traffic where necessary.

"The strong winds can take down trees and limbs," said Director
Howland. "We ask the public to report down trees by calling 311. To
report outages and down wires, call Pepco at 1-877-PEPCO-62
(1-877-737-2662)."

DPW is postponing Monday's bulk collections and notifying residents of
the new day. Also, residents are asked to bag their leaves so they
don't collect in the storm drains and cause flooding.

Residents may go to hsema.dc.gov to get tips to help them prepare
their homes and families for the storm. To receive important TXT
messages about the latest information on weather, traffic, closings
and more, sign up for ALERT DC at textalert.ema.dc.gov.

[NSCoderNightDC] Meeting tonight,

So I figured we should have a meeting tonight because... you know... it's tuesday, what else could we do?

hmm... I'm not sure what we could talk about, but hopefully we'll think of something. If not, well, I guess we can just have a nice quiet time and reflect on all that is good in our lives or something. I dunno, hopefully we'll discuss some movie or something.

anyways... as usual, we'll meet a La Madeleine near the Bethesda Metro station at 7:00pm.

Hope to see you there, and if you could think of a topic of discussion, that would be swell,
Jose
