We just celebrated our 40th year and as the incoming President of WAPA I just want to welcome everyone back for another great year. We have an exciting year planned with all of the events and services that you know and love and a couple of new initiatives that I hope you'll enjoy. We have our Fall Potluck party this Sunday from 3 to 6PM and I hope to see everyone there (527 Shepherd Street NW). Bring yourselves and bring someone who might be interested in joining WAPA if you can. We are doing a membership drive this month and we'd like to see many of our new members help us build our organization to fit the needs of all anthropologists in the greater DC metropolitan area for the next 40 years.
Here are some of the programs we are continuing:
· Fall-Winter-Spring Speaker Series -- this year we are continuing our speaker series, which will kick off with a Black Lives Matter panel on October 6, 2016 and be followed throughout the fall, winter and spring by monthly speaker events highlighting anthropologists who live in this area and work on a wide range of topics
· Monthly Happy Hours – and don't forget to join us for the happy hour/dinner prior to speaker events, where you can meet the newest members to WAPA and catch up with members you already know. It's a great chance to network and enjoy talking all things anthropology. See www.wapadc.org for more information on speaker events and happy hours.
· WAPA Jobs Listserv – anyone is welcome to join our jobs listserv where we post internships, jobs, and opportunities for anthropologists in the greater metropolitan DC area. Contact fnorwood@gwu.edu to join (This is a free service of WAPA and you do not have to be a member to join the listserv).
· WAPA Mentorship program – if you are new to anthropology and want help negotiating education, job or career choices or if you just need to connect with someone in your interest area, check out our mentorship program at www.wapadc.org
H Here are some of the new programs we are launching this year:
· WAPA Meetups -- join us for a new WAPA Meetup series that will include events around the greater Washington DC area geared to our younger anthropologists. We will also seeking up to two student representatives from each of the local universities to help plan Meetup events. See Beth Moretzsky and Davis Shoulders for more information.
· WAPA Features – check out our new blog by WAPA members and edited by Davis Shoulders. WAPA Features will give members a chance to blog about topics of interest, events, and anything anthropology and help us establish a dialogue with the greater virtual community both local and abroad. https://wapadc.wordpress.com
Annual membership fees will be increasing in 2017 from $25 to $40 for regular members and from $15 to $20 for student members. If you join now, you will receive membership at the current fee through December 31, 2017. More importantly, you will help us continue to provide support for these and other WAPA functions and services.
Welcome back to WAPA,
Fannie Norwood
President 2016-2017
