Dear All:

These our the notes from our wonderful meeting last week. I am standing in for Erin, as secretary, since she couldn't be there on Oct. 21.

  • The meeting was very well attended with members (Mark Wills, Laura Zam, Jill Vanderweit,Lennette Ward, Kristin Sullens, and Omer Ipekci), members from other clubs (Elisa Yao and Eva Yu, membersof Johns Hopkins club; and Shaunessye Curry, member of South Suburban Chicago club), and guests  (David Schupak and Scott Nguyen)
  • Mark, as president, had everyone introduce themselves. Then Omar, as Toastmaster of the Evening (TMOE) went over rules for our club. Jill, as grammarian supplied the Word of the Day: Trepidation.
  • Mark's speech was the first. He did Speech #7 in the CC manual, Research Your Topic. The title of this talk was "Talk for (Less) Change?" This talk was very engaging and well-crafted.
  • Next, Shaunessye did her ice-breaker, Speech #1. Her speech was titled "The Many Faces of Shay." Our club acknowledged how brave she was to deliver her very first speech to an unfamiliar group (as she is a member of another club). Her talk was about her childhood, high school, and college years. It was dynamic and well-organized.
  • Table Topics was next, led by Omar. Omar. He allowed volunteers to choose a Halloween or non-Halloween theme. Those that spoke were guests David and Eva, as well as TFC member Kristin. All did very well.
  • Kristin stepped in as General Evaluator, even though she is very new to Toastmaster's. She did an excellent job.
  • Next came evaluation of speeches. Laura evaluated Mark's speech and Jill evaluated Shaunessye's speech.
  • Jill, as Grammarian, gave her report, noting filler words we used (not excessive at this meeting). She also commended those that used the word of the day.
  • Mark talked about club business, including how guests may join.
  • Then Omar closed the meeting talking about volunteer opportunities we might take advantage of individually, or as a collective.
Best,

Laura
