MERCY IN THE CITY BOOK DISCUSSION (Wednesday, 12/2)

Pope Francis has declared the coming liturgical year to be a Holy Year of Mercy, to highlight the Catholic Church's "mission to be a witness of mercy." Our club will be reading Mercy in the City, a young Catholic woman's story of her efforts to live out the Works of Mercy in the busy and bustling New York City. It's a short read (under 150 pages), and can easily be purchased online or at most bookstores for $10-13. This will be a great way to begin the Year of Mercy and the Advent season!

"For anyone who, like Weber, longs to live a more merciful life amid the pressures and responsibilities of the"real world," Mercy in the City offers this inspiration: You can do it - wherever God has placed you!"

[TalkForChange:663] FW: Notes from our last meeting

All,

Here are Laura's notes from our Oct. 21 meeting; they didn't go through previously.

Cheers,
Mark

Mark Wills
2015–2016 President, Talk For Change

Date: Tue, 27 Oct 2015 18:47:14 -0400
Subject: Notes from our last meeting
From: laurazamevents@gmail.com
To: mcwtoastmaster@outlook.com; tfctoastmasters@googlegroups.com

Dear All:

These our the notes from our wonderful meeting last week. I am standing in for Erin, as secretary, since she couldn't be there on Oct. 21.

  • The meeting was very well attended with members (Mark Wills, Laura Zam, Jill Vanderweit,Lennette Ward, Kristin Sullens, and Omer Ipekci), members from other clubs (Elisa Yao and Eva Yu, membersof Johns Hopkins club; and Shaunessye Curry, member of South Suburban Chicago club), and guests  (David Schupak and Scott Nguyen)
  • Mark, as president, had everyone introduce themselves. Then Omar, as Toastmaster of the Evening (TMOE) went over rules for our club. Jill, as grammarian supplied the Word of the Day: Trepidation.
  • Mark's speech was the first. He did Speech #7 in the CC manual, Research Your Topic. The title of this talk was "Talk for (Less) Change?" This talk was very engaging and well-crafted.
  • Next, Shaunessye did her ice-breaker, Speech #1. Her speech was titled "The Many Faces of Shay." Our club acknowledged how brave she was to deliver her very first speech to an unfamiliar group (as she is a member of another club). Her talk was about her childhood, high school, and college years. It was dynamic and well-organized.
  • Table Topics was next, led by Omar. Omar. He allowed volunteers to choose a Halloween or non-Halloween theme. Those that spoke were guests David and Eva, as well as TFC member Kristin. All did very well.
  • Kristin stepped in as General Evaluator, even though she is very new to Toastmaster's. She did an excellent job.
  • Next came evaluation of speeches. Laura evaluated Mark's speech and Jill evaluated Shaunessye's speech.
  • Jill, as Grammarian, gave her report, noting filler words we used (not excessive at this meeting). She also commended those that used the word of the day.
  • Mark talked about club business, including how guests may join.
  • Then Omar closed the meeting talking about volunteer opportunities we might take advantage of individually, or as a collective.
Best,

Laura

[ND-DC-YA] ND Family Mass Tomorrow

Dear Young Alums,

It's a bye week, but that doesn't mean you don't have any ND activities on the docket! Join us for the ND Family Mass and Potluck Dinner tomorrow at GMU! We'll pick up at The Exchange next week. Have a great weekend!

EVENTS IN THIS ISSUE:

ND Family Mass and Potluck Dinner (Saturday, 10/24)

Support Veterans: The Indiana Honor Flight (Saturday, 10/31)

OTHER ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Better Off Bowling

  • Call for Volunteers: Involvement on the Young Alumni Committee

  • ND-DC Club Online Membership

ND FAMILY MASS AND POTLUCK DINNER (SATURDAY, 10/24)

Please join us for a Notre Dame family Mass and potluck dinner on Saturday, October 24. The Mass will be held at GMU's Catholic chapel (4515 Roberts Road, Fairfax, VA) at 5:30 p.m (confessions will run from 4:30 - 5:15). Jim Hinkle ND '01 will be co-celebrating with Father Ford. The dinner will follow in the chapel's activity room.

It is a potluck dinner with the ND-DC club furnishing the main dish and dessert. We are asking for a donation of $25 per couple. For additional information, please email Dan Palmer at dan@palmer.org or Joe Libby at libbyclu@aol.com.

SUPPORT VETERANS: THE INDIANA HONOR FLIGHT (SATURDAY, 10/31)

The Purdue Alumni Club has asked the ND Club to join them in supporting the Indiana Honor Flight on Saturday, October 31.  The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization that flies veterans from cities all over the country to Washington DC to honor them by transporting them to the various war memorials on the National Mall.  There is a group of approximately 200 veterans from the state of Indiana flying in on October 31st.  The Notre Dame Club is looking for volunteers for 1) greeting the veterans as they arrive at Reagan National by cheering, etc. as they get off the plane and 2) greeting the veterans at the different memorials themselves (the vets love reflecting on their experiences in the military and it is pretty rewarding to be able to walk around the memorials with them).

For Option #1, we would be looking for volunteers at National Airport for the 8:34am and 9:34am flights.  The flights are being called ABLE and BAKER.
•Greeters are asked to arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes early.
•Greeters shall RSVP at http://www.cvent.com/d/2rqyz5 NLT 27 October to get a Gate Access Pass which will allow them to pass security and greet the veterans at the gate upon their arrival
•Greeters who will pass security will be asked to present identification the day of the event at the airport.  Children are absolutely welcome and while they will not have to present identification, all children must still RSVP to be on the list.

For Option #2, after the veterans arrive and are transported to the National Mall, folks are welcome to join the veterans as they visit their respective war monuments.  Apparently veterans love when there are folks accompanying them.  We are waiting for specific details and times, and will pass that info on once we know!

If you are interested in supporting the Honor Flight veterans, please contact MaryKate Robinson @ marykate@alumni.nd.edu and let her know whether or not you plan on supporting Option 1 (airport greeting) or Option 2 (memorial meeting).  Thanks!

DCYP is hosting a Fall Festival (traditionally our Halloween Carnival) for the children and families of the Easter Seals Respite program. Many of these children are disabled or are children of Wounded Warriors. Lots of enthusiastic volunteers are needed to help run fall-themed activities and crafts, serve lunch, set up, break down, and more! Register on our EventBrite page and contact Lissa at
dcyp.service@gmail.com to get involved with the planning committee.
