 LOOKING FOR PERMANENT HOUSING

***(NEW) 8/29 Hey All! My name is Matt Devine, a 2015 Economics and Peace Studies major from the lovely Knott Hall (Mod Quaders take on DC!). I just moved to Washington DC last week and am living in Woodley Park with a good friend of mine, but am looking for more permanent housing. Would like to stay under $800-1,100/month in rent, but am a little flexible on that.  Shoot me an email at matthewmdevine@gmail.com if you or anyone you know is looking for roommates! Thanks and Go Irish! :)***

***(NEW) 8/29 Hi - My name is Amanda, and I graduated from ND in 2014 with a Marketing/English double major. I'm relocating to DC with my company in mid-late Oct., and I'm looking for housing in Woodley Park -- a location where I can park my car (somewhat?) easily. Ideally would pay between $800-1200 for rent. Send me an email atafrick3@alumni.nd.edu or amandafrick19@gmail.com if you have a place or are interested in looking for one together. Thank you!***

*** 8/3 Hi! My name is Christopher Brown; I graduated from the College of Arts and Letters at ND in 2015. I'm going to be starting a new job in early August, and I'm looking for new housing. My hope is to keep rent around $800-1000 max. I'd like to stay within walking distance of a Metro line, though I'd consider other areas if the price is right. I'm looking to move in early to mid-August.  Shoot me an email at cbrown35@alumni.nd.edu  or christopherbrown351@gmail.com  if you have a place or are interested in looking for one together. Thanks!***

*** 6/17 Hi! My name is Stephanie McKay, and I am a 2014 Program of Liberal Studies graduate. I am going to be starting a 2 year MPH in Global Health in the Fall at GW. The other 3 roommates (2 working, 1 grad school) ages 24-25 occupy the second floor bedrooms. $1200/month (potentially negotiable), available 9/1. Email bgeary2@alumni.nd.edu for pictures and more info!***

He  will be in Washington DC, offering a mass in Catholic University on September 23rd.  We have an apartment available in Eckington/Bloomingdale for rent which is walking distance (less than 1.5 miles) to the Basilica. If friends or family are planning to visit Washington to see the Pope, they can contact me at lau.aragon@gmail.com***

Hi  everyone - hope you're enjoying the beautiful weather this week! We look forward to taking advantage of it with some great outdoor events next month. For our September Happy Hour, we're excited to return to Glen's Garden Market for drinks on the patio. And mark your calendars for one of our favorite service projects of the year - apple picking at a local farm to benefit the Arlington Food Assistance Center!

See you in September,

Amanda

Upcoming Events

Happy Hour at Glen's Garden Market
Where: Glen's Garden Market (2001 S Street Northwest)
When: Wednesday, September 9 (6-8:00pm)
Metro: Dupont Circle (Red)

Due to popular demand, we will return to Glen's Garden Market in Dupont Circle for our September Happy Hour! Join us on the patio to soak up the beautiful weather, enjoy $4 draft specials, and catch up with fellow young professionals! We'll also have details about upcoming events and service projects - newcomers always welcome. To spot the group, just look for the red balloon.

Apple Picking for the Arlington Food Assistance Center
Where: Local Farm – TBA
When: Saturday, September 26 (9:00am - 12:00pm)
Metro: RSVP to coordinate a carpool

We all love fresh, local produce at our farmers markets, well so do those needing a little assistance with food when times are hard. The Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC) coordinates with farmers around our region to have volunteers glean surplus produce that would otherwise be left to waste in the fields. This project provides literally tons of free, fresh and nutritious food to AFAC, and this month, DCYP is going to help by picking apples at a local orchard! We participated in this project last year, and even discovered the local farmers market with apple cider and other fresh apple goodies. To RSVP, email dcyp.service@gmail.com and let us know if you are able to help drive, or if you would like help coordinating a carpool.

Special Announcement:

As we gear up for an exciting 2015-16 Kiwanis year, we would like to remind all members that dues renewals are due by September 20, and will keep your membership current through the end of September 2016. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" Speech 52nd Anniversary (Free)

Friday, August 28, 2015
6:00 PM

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial - Bookstore
1964 Independence Ave SW, Washington, DC

August 28 is the 52nd anniversary (1963) of the "I Have a Dream" speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. Dr. King was one of several speakers during the day-long "March on Washington for Job and Freedom" program. Let's visit both the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, which honors Dr. King, and the Lincoln Memorial, where the speech was given, to discuss this event as well as its impact and its legacy.

Also, while many people have heard portions of the speech not everyone has heard the entire speech. Robert will bring his laptop and we can listen to the full speech in the setting it was delivered in.

Logistics:

Meet outside the MLK Memorial Bookstore, which is right next to the memorial (where the large tour buses drop off visitors).

The memorial can be reached by a 1-1.3 mile walk from the following Metro stations: Smithsonian, Foggy Bottom & Arlington Cemetery. There is some street parking but you will have to pay and walk a ways to get to the memorial.

Please be on time. If you are running late just catch up with the group at either the MLK Memorial (our first stop) or the Lincoln Memorial (our second stop) and look for Robert (6-5 tall wearing a Meetup sticker). My contact info is below but unable to easily respond once the program begins.

Optional dinner after the event at a TBD inexpensive restaurant on the way to the Foggy Bottom Metro Station.

Thanks!
