[tfctoastmasters:636] Last call (no drinks involved, however)

Fellow Toastmasters,

Do you want to reconnect with Toastmasters/Talk For Change after a bit of time away. In either case, tomorrow night's meeting is almost upon us, but we still have a few meeting roles open:

  • Toastmasters of the Evening (TMOE)
  • Topicsmaster (for Table Topics)
  • General Evaluator

And if you have a speech you'd like to give — or think you can prepare by 6:45 tomorrow night — be brave and share it with us. As Omer, our outgoing President, has often enougaged (and I paraphrase here), take advantage of the learning opportunities Toastmasters provides you through the meetings generally but also through the constructive feedback you receive about your participation in a meeting — be it as a formal speaker. Table Topics "adventurer" or as the Timer.

It's not too late to sign up for a role, so please take a moment to do so now.

Many thanks — and see you tomorrow night,
Mark

Whether you want to show off your skills or you simply just like to have a good time, there's a spot on the roster waiting for you - please contact Jimmy Mandich '02/'03MSA (jimmymandich@yahoo.com) or Brandon Lenk '05(brandonlenk@gmail.com) for more information. Go Irish!

Looking for some alum sports fun over the summer?

As Fighting Irish alums, we get $10 off the regular registration price with the discount code:  DCALUMSUM15

[tfctoastmasters:635] 8 Ways to Beat the Heat

Fellow Toastmasters,

We still have eight — count 'em, eight — slots open to be of service at next Wednesday's club meeting. And that includes two speaker slots! As a personal plea to avoid having me at the podium for about 50 of the 60 (scheduled) minutes of the meeting, please sign up for one of the open roles (two speaker slots, plus Toastmaster of the Evening, Table Topics Master, General Evaluator, a second Speech Evaluator, Timer, Grammarian) and be one of the truly cool kids (we'll turn on the A/C and try to drown out any drunken karaoke coming from the street below).

If you have any questions, comments or concerns, please shoot me an email and I'll get back to you ASAP.

Have a nice weekend,
Mark

LOOKING FOR TEMPORARY HOUSING

*** (NEW) 6/24 Hi all. My name is Anukampa and I am an MPA candidate at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University. I am looking for a short-term lease or sublet from 27 June - 31 August (or, July 1 - Aug 31). I can be contacted at agupta02@syr.edu. I do not have a car so am not concerned about parking. Anything in the DC metro area or Georgetown area will work for me. Please feel free to email me and we can set up a time to connect. Thank You.***

*** (NEW) 6/24 Hi, my name is Hafez AbuAdwan and I'm a student at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, studying International Education. I will be moving to Washington DC for my summer internship at Creative Associates International. I will need to rent the room from now to August 10. I am a young professional- I worked with some international education bodies. In Amherst, I live with three roommates plus my landlady. I believe study, work, and fun can all be achieved by moderation. I am an outgoing, easy going, and positive person. My phone number is 413-404-0053. If interested, we can schedule a Skype interview. ***

***6/17 My name is Peter Cummings (Class of 2014). I am currently living in Santiago, Chile, but I will be moving to Washington D.C. at the beginning of September. I'm looking to share an apartment with one or more roommates from September to February. I'm pretty flexible about location within DC, but I would like to spend less than $1000 per month. Feel free to email me at: pmmcummings1@gmail.com. Thanks!***

*** 6/11 I am looking for a furnished room for three months, starting from June 20th. My priority is location since I plan to go downtown quite often, so I hope to live close to a metro station. I expect to find a place for 700-750 USD/month utilities included. About myself, I recently graduated from the masters in Peace Studies and I am originally from Colombia. I am going to DC to look for employment opportunities. Thanks! Claudia Navas (cnavas@alumni.nd.edu)***

***
6/4 Hello Notre Dame Club of D.C., my name is Michael Kunath, I'm a rising senior Finance major at Notre Dame (Class of 2016) from Raleigh, NC. I'm reaching out to your club because I received an internship offer at Tax Analysts in Falls Church, VA, which would start next week on June 8th. I need to find a room to rent in the $500-$600/month range from June 7th – Aug 15th in Falls Church, preferably within 1-2 miles of downtown Falls Church. I don't know anyone in Falls Church so I'd prefer to connect with a Domer or friend of a Domer if possible. I'm just looking for a basic place with bath and kitchen access so I can take the internship. I'm quiet, non-smoker, and respectful of others' belongings. I know that this is very last minute, but anything that you can think of would be very appreciated. Thanks for your help, Mike Kunath (mkunath@nd.edu) ***

***5/4 My name is Nhu Phan, and I graduated from ND in 2012 with a bachelor's in business management consulting and peace studies. I'm currently pursuing my Master's in human rights and humanitarian action at Sciences Po in Paris, France. For the coming Fall semester, we are required to do an internship, so I will be in Washington DC from July until December 2015 to intern with the Alliance for Peacebuilding (10 minute walking distance from the White House). I'm so excited about the work - I will be transposing international peace building practices into American policies, with a particular focus on the Middle East! However, it is unpaid so my budget is quite limited. If possible, I would love to find a place within walking distance to Alliance for Peacebuilding (max: 1 hour). I would appreciate any assistance with my search. Please email me at nhuphan@alumni.nd.edu - thank you!***

*** 4/27 My name is Mark Waguespack. This summer I will be a rising junior at the University of Notre Dame and I have an internship in McLean, Virginia. I am looking for short term summer housing for 11-12 weeks (from May 24 or May 31 to August 15, 2015). I would like to rent a room in someone's house or find roommates to share a rental property, sublet, etc. I will have a car but it would be a plus being close to the Silver Line.  Please contact me at mark2612@comcast.net if you have any suggestions. Thanks.***

*** 4/21 Hello, my name is Pete Gonzales and I am a rising senior at ND. I am looking for a room, a one bedroom, or a two bedroom apartment in DC to rent from June 29-August 15. If a two bedroom is possible, another student Jessee Wurzer would also like to come in!  We're laid back interns looking for a place to sleep at night and enjoy good conversation if that's preferable, if not we're glad to keep to ourselves. Please email at pgonzal7@nd.edu with any opportunities.***

[tfctoastmasters:634] The second half of 2015 begins with Toastmasters

All,

Hope everyone is doing well and "enjoying" the weather. As a native Minnesotan, I break into a flop sweat at the mere mention of the term "heat index," so more power to you if you aren't wilting at this point.

(1) Talk for Change's next meeting is Wednesday, July 1, at 6:45. As always, we'll be in the Sandstone Room at the Viva Center, which is on the third floor of the Anchorage building (1555 Connecticut [the door is on Q, opposite Firehook and next to Raku]).

So far, we only have two people signed up for roles (thank you, Lynnie and Alicia) -- and we need speakers! If you haven't given a speech for a while or want to do your "Ice Breaker" speech (i.e., Speech 1 out of the first Toastmasters manual, Competent Communication), take a moment and head to our sign-up sheet. There are lots of opportunities to contribute to the meeting, give back a bit to the club and build your own skillset out a bit. Also, on that same sign-up sheet, you can sign up for roles at meetings down the road. (Not to embarrass her, but Lynnie's already signed up for a speech on the 15th; well-played!)

(2) If you have friends, colleagues, relatives, etc., who you think might be interested in checking out our meetings, please do extend the invitation. If some do intend to swing by, please let club officers know so we can extend a warm welcome.

(2)(a) As a reminder, the officers for the 2015-16 club year (which begins officially at our next meeting) are:

  • President — Mark Wills
  • Vice President Education — Nils Junge
  • Vice President Membership — Andrey Shevchenko
  • Vice President Public Relations — Jill Vanderweit
  • Treasurer — Omer Ipekci
  • Secretary — Erin Shea

(2)(b) And if you're not yet a member or your membership has lapsed, please contact Andrey or talk with him next Wednesday and he'll walk you through the process.

(3) Speaking of club officers, we are looking for a Sergeant-at-Arms. In short, what this means is being the keeper of our key and being at meetings to open and close up — and if unable to be there, to make sure someone has the key before the next meeting. Please let any club officer know — either by email or at next week's meeting — if you're interested.

(4) Lastly, Omer did a great job in the 2014-15 club year of putting the "change" into Talk for Change. In the coming year, I hope to be able to build upon his efforts in engaging organizations in the community. I've put out feelers regarding involvement with an animal rescue organization to participate in local events, but nothing has been finalized as yet. If you have any ideas about community engagement or volunteer opportunities in which the club might participate, please let me know.

If you have any questions, concerns or comments about any of these items, please give me a shout and I'll reply promptly.

Here's to a great new (club) year,
Mark
