My Concerns

Good Day All,

I am writing to inquire about the reason or justification behind not having a school wide Black History Celebration.  It is admirable to acknowledge Black History, however, as a Parent first and an Educator second, I feel like I am missing out on the some of the achievements of my child.  Black History is something that should be celebrated especially in a predominately African American school.  Yes, I am Pro-academics, but our children need to know about the hardships and accomplishments of our ancestors and should be able to showcase it.  For instance, my son wants to be an engineer, why is it that students weren't assigned projects about someone they aspire to be like, that in turn could have been a showcase of what they learned about the person.  His preschool teachers were on the money with the project last year (Shout out to Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Jalloh)

In general I would like to see more being done on a school level to involve parents.  The lines of communication are clogged and need to be opened up.  I want to be involved in my childs' learning, but when I feel like there is no effort on the part of the school to be family inclusive, it's a little disconcerting.  Looking at the level of activity at the Edgwood campuses, sometimes makes me rethink switching schools, they have so much more going on, their parents are on the Board, WHAT ABOUT US East of the River?  I love the mission and vision of the school, but I don't like feeling like I should move my child to another school because of these minor things that could easily be changed.  I want the same opportunities for our campus as the Edgwood campuses.

I think I have said enough for now.  If there are any other Preppy Parents out there that feel like I do, Please speak up!

Regards,
Tiffany Ouarid, M.Ed.
Concerned Parent

LOOKING FOR HOST FOR A SUMMER SERVICE STUDENT

Did you know that every summer, ND-DC hosts two to four students who are participating in the Center for Social Concerns Summer Service Learning Program (SSLP)? As a thank you for their service, ND-DC provides a $2,500 scholarship for these students who spend 8 weeks working in local charities. The SSLP is a tremendous program that makes a big difference in the dozens of cities/communities worldwide where the students serve. ND-DC is very lucky and proud to serve as one of the host clubs.

We are looking for ONE host family/couple to provide a supportive home for one of our students for 8 weeks this summer. Host families need to be able to provide a bedroom (private/unshared) and meals for the student, and should not have extensive travel plans for the summer. The student is a female, rising junior who will be working at the Lourie Center for Infants and Young Children (http://www.louriecenter.org/lc/) in Rockville and will have access to a car, so metro-accessibility is not a necessity. The ideal dates for this SSLP, based on the Lourie Center's summer program, is from June 17 until August 9, but they are flexible based on the host family's availability.

ND-DC families who have previously hosted students have noted that their families were profoundly enriched by sharing in the SSLP experience for the summer and many have formed lifelong friendships with their students. If you would like more information on the SSLP and our student or would like to volunteer to host for the summer, please contact Molly Savage '05 at msavage@alumni.nd.edu.

This large 2nd story unfurnished room has two built-in closets, a private bath, and plenty of sunlight! Shared spaces include: furnished patio, small living room, and recently renovated kitchen. The room is available starting February 1st and we'd like our new roommate to commit through June 1 (when the lease ends), with possibility for extension. Rent is $1,350 per month + utilities (~$100-$150 per person per month) + $1,350 (one month's rent) security deposit. The apartment is a five minute walk to Dupont Circle, 10 minutes to Adams Morgan and U Street, and about 15 minutes to Farragut Square. · Looking for a roommate (approx April 2013) to share my rented 2 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath condo in Old Town Alexandria off Duke/West Street. Rent is approximately $1250 plus utilities.  The condo is located a half mile from the King Street metro (10 min walk), and there is a Whole Foods about halfway between them. The condo is furnished aside from the bedroom that needs to be rented. Appliances are up to date and there is a full sized washer and dryer.  Two block walk to the shops on King Street and less than a mile to the water.  Convenient access to the Mount Vernon Trail. Unfortunately no pets allowed. Email Kerry at kinglis3@gmail.com if interested.

· Katie Brophy ('06) and Jenny Walls ('06) are looking for a roommate for their Ballston townhouse. Rent is $800 per month not including utilities.  Awesome place located four blocks from the metro with easy access to the city.  Please contact katie.brophy@gmail.com for more information.

If interested, please email Sarah and Andrea at sbaker8488@gmail.com.

· Four women (including an ND alum) are looking for one or two housemates in Arlington. Our large town home is located a short walk from the Courthouse and Clarendon metros, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, restaurants, shopping in downtown Clarendon and is a short drive to St. Agnes. The townhouse is only a few years old and is gorgeous! There are four floors three and a half bathrooms, a large kitchen with granite counter tops, washer and dryer, pool and concierge that receives packages and provides 24-hour maintenance. The open room is the master suite and is the entire second floor. It has a large walk-in closet and a very spacious bathroom (two sinks, separate washroom, granite countertops, large Jacuzzi tub and separate walk-in shower). We like to entertain and are very easy going. The rent for the master suite is $1,850.00 ($925/person if shared) a month plus approximately $80/person/month for cleaning and utilities (we all pitch in on a cleaning service), and $85-$100 for underground parking (parking is optional but street parking is limited and first come first served). Please e-mail me with leads: cody.gaffney@gmail.com

· Two Notre Dame law students are searching for summer housing in the D.C. area this summer.  Dates will be from mid-May to the first week of August.  Preferred neighborhoods include Capitol Hill, DuPont Circle, Woodley Park, Foggy Bottom, and Orange-Line Arlington.  Easy Access to Metro is a must.  Furnishings preferred.  If interested, please contact Jon Heintz '09 at jgheintz@gmail.com

[tfctoastmasters:453] TFC February 20 Meeting Agenda

Hello Toastmasters,
Please find attached tonight's meeting agenda.
Our meeting begins at 6:45pm and is located at 1875 Connecticut Avenue, at the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and T Street across from the Washington Hilton Hotel. Please try to arrive by 6:40pm to ensure that we start and end on time. If you have a role and are running late, please be sure to text me at 202-821-8074 so we can plan accordingly.

The building is located approximately 3 blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro (red line), North exit on the right. You can also take the 42 Bus heading north from Metro Center. If you need to park, there are normally metered spots in front of building on Connecticut available, as well as some spots on T Street. There are two entrances (1825 & 1875) and we need to enter through the 1875 entrance ("Universal North"). The doors will be locked, so we will meet in the lobby before the meeting. If you come after the start of the meeting, the building guard will let you inside. Please give the guard your name and he or she will let you up to the meeting on the 12th floor at the American Public Power Association's main conference room.

Cheers!
Tanya
