DC SNOW TEAM INITIATES FIRST FULL DEPLOYMENT

OF 2012-2013 WINTER SEASON; PRE-TREATMENT BEGINS FRI., DEC. 28

Plows will be on their routes by 4 am Sat., Dec. 29; up to one inch of snow may accumulate before changing to rain.

(Washington, DC)  In anticipation of a winter storm predicted for this weekend, the DC Snow Team (Departments of Public Works and Transportation) will deploy 200 snow plows by 4 am on Saturday, December 29 and will pre-treat bridges, overpasses and other elevated structures with a brine and beet juice solution to reduce the possibility of freezing.  The weather services predict about 1inch of snow to accumulate in the District during the pre-dawn hours and then mix with rain after 9-10AM.

"The 200 plows will begin spreading salt on DC streets, including 82 residential routes once snow begins to fall," said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr.  "The system is fast moving and is expected to leave the area by 3-4PM Saturday.  We will monitor storm conditions to determine what, if any, changes should be made in our deployment plan.  The temperature is expected to be just above freezing during the day on Saturday, but will drop below freezing Saturday night; therefore, motorists and pedestrians should be very cautious as they travel because refreezing may occur."

To track the plows, go to snow.dc.gov and click on http://snowmap.dc.gov/.

Snow Safety and Preparedness Tips:  People driving, walking or bicycling around the District should travel cautiously. Property owners are asked to pre-treat their sidewalks with abrasives and remove snow within 24 hours of the end of the storm, and assist their elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing their sidewalks. Also, for our drivers' safety and yours, "Don't crowd the plow."  Residents are encouraged to go to snow.dc.gov for updates before, during and after snowstorms, and for tips to get one's home and family prepared for inclement weather.  Residents also may sign up at alert.dc.gov to receive emergency alerts and notifications from Alert DC.

Trash/Recycling Collections:  DPW trash and recycling collections will be made Saturday, December 29.  "We did not collect trash and recycling on Christmas, so our collections schedule 'slides' to the next day and Friday's collections will be made Saturday," said Director Howland.  He added that next week normal collections will be made Monday, December 31, collections will not be made Tuesday, January 1 and collections through the rest of the week "slide" to the next day.

The Department of Anthropology at St. Mary's College of Maryland welcomes Visiting Anthropologist Daniel Everett (Bentley U), author of "Don't Sleep, There are Snakes" on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 for a public lecture in Cole Cinema from 4:15 - 5:30PM. Lecture title: "Beyond Human Nature: Understanding Ourselves as the Unpredictable Species." Abstract for talk: Humans are neither a blank slate nor a full slate at birth. Though humans clearly have an innate endowment that distinguishes us from other species, the hallmark of Homo sapiens is our unpredictability. Drawing on a new body of research emerging in philosophy, evolutionary theory, anthropology and linguistics, I argue that there is no such thing as "human nature" that has any deep explanatory value.

Everybody is welcome, for more information contact Bill Roberts, wcroberts@smcm.edu or 240-895-4287

Quick feedback: tweeting from the app doesn't seem to contain a "via airendipity" link. Wanted to tweet an amusing one and simultaneously promote the app, but have to take a few extra steps to find the right link to add in!

Really at this point I just need people to spread the word, since I'm not the most high-profile of developers (more or less the opposite, really) and because I think the app's, well, soul is best communicated via word-of-mouth.

Thanks.

Really at this point I just need people to spread the word, since I'm not the most high-profile of developers (more or less the opposite, really) and because I think the app's, well, soul is best communicated via word-of-mouth.

ND CAREER NIGHT 1/10

A couple of FAQs answered:
1. Yes, this is specifically for the ND Club - you may make contacts for friends, but this is a specific perk for alumni and ND Club members.
2. Bring copies of your resume and business cards if you are seeking job opportunities!

On Thursday, January 10th, 6:30-8:30pm, the ND Club of Washington DC will once again host the ND community at Jones Day (51 Louisiana Avenue Northwest, Washington, DC 20001) for a Notre Dame Career Night.  This event will be highlighted by a speech by John Sturm, the new Associate Vice President of Federal and Washington Relations, who will speak on his new position and the value of networking in the Notre Dame community.  Tables will be arranged by industry, and those with possible job openings will be near the table to answer questions and identify potential future coworkers.

Please bring your resume and join us for a night of networking and refreshments.  It is only $10 for ND Club of DC Members and $15 for non-Club Members, to cover complimentary drinks and snacks.  Please register in advance.

Thanks, Go Irish, and see you on January 10th!

Don't forget tomorrow night is our TFC Holiday Party. Hope to see you their for food, drinks and fun!

Our party begins at 6:45pm and is located at the AED building at 1875 Connecticut Avenue.

AED is located approximately 3 blocks from the Dupont Circle Metro (red line), North exit on the right. You can also take the 42 Bus heading north from Metro Center. If you need to park, there are normally metered spots in front of AED on Connecticut available, as well as some spots on T Street.  AED has two entrances (1825 & 1875) and we need to enter through the 1875 entrance. The doors will be locked, so we will meet in the lobby before the meeting.  If you come after the start of the meeting, the building guard will let you inside. Please give the guard your name and he or she will let you up to the meeting on the 12th Floor at the American Public Power Association's main conference room.

Happy Holidays!
