[wapadc] Contention in and following 2016 elections - ethnography planning meeting 4-2-2017 3PM

YOU ARE INVITED!

What:  Planning Session for Group Ethnography on Social and Political Views Post 2016 Election

When:  Sunday, April 2nd, 3-5PM

Where:  Frances Norwood's home, 527 Shepherd Street NW (3.5 blocks from Georgia Avenue/Petworth metro)

All are welcome to join members of the Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists to discuss the potential of launching a group ethnography to explore main areas of contention and main areas of agreement among voters and non-voters following the contentious 2016 election. We want to recognize the diversity of groups defined by political, ethnic, religious and geographic identities and affected by different risks and opportunities while seeking common concerns and values that cross-cut these differences. The study will build on what has already been documented in studies such as Strangers in their own land: Anger and Mourning on the American Right by Arlie R. Hochschild; and   Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and a Culture in Crisis by JD Vance.

WAPA seeks collaboration with anthropologists from across the U.S. who can commit to help refine the design of this study, interview voters and non-voters in their home states, and collaborate in data analysis.  The proposed timeframe is: draft study instruments and protocols for ethical review spring 2017, data collection over summer 2017, data analysis early fall, and publishable results before the end of 2017. Participants will be encouraged to publish in blogs and other e-fora, conferences, local and national media, and scholarly journals to share the findings widely.
