I love traveling (I've lived in Madrid for this year, studied in Santiago, Chile, and interned in Dublin), and I plan to travel as much as possible on weekends still. [wapadc] Draft WAPA statement for membership comment

Dear WAPA members,

A few members have gotten together, reviewed by the WAPA board, to draft a statement in response to some of the policies and rhetoric coming out of the new administration.  We plan to post this statement on our website, on our blog, and to share with press and others.  Please take a moment to review this draft statement.  If you have any comments or suggested edits please send to Frances Norwood at francesnorwood@aol.com by Friday, March 31st.  Once the comment period has ended we will post the final version to the public.  Thanks for your help.

WAPA Statement – for website, press release and blog
Draft 3-23-2017

The Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists (WAPA) represents anthropologists living and working across the greater D.C. region.  WAPA is one of the oldest and largest regional associations of professional anthropologists in the United States.  In the wake of the 2016 national U.S. elections, we resolve the following:

We condemn and will actively work against policies, programs, and inflammatory rhetoric that support racist, anti-immigrant, sexist, gender-biased, religious or otherwise discriminatory or divisive views;

We recognize the US. is a country of immigrants and we value and support diversity and the unique differences that we share, be it dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies; and

We condemn the use of inflammatory rhetoric and false information from the new administration and others to incite hate crimes, discrimination,  or violence towards any community, including but not limited to African Americans, LGBTQ, refugees and asylum seekers, new immigrants, women, persons with disabilities, and seniors;

We condemn and will actively work against unconstitutional policies and programs that may suppress freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the right to assemble and peacefully protest;

We resolve to stand in on-going support of the pursuit of scientific inquiry into the human condition for the betterment of the communities in which we conduct our research.  We value the use of social science, empirical evidence and scholarly inquiry as the basis for illuminating, supporting, and valuing diversity.

We resolve that the Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists will stand in solidarity with anyone who feels unfairly threatened or attacked because of their beliefs, orientation, racial or ethnic background.

Allow me to share something profitable with you today.

If you're wondering why I'm emailing you now, out of the blue, after months of radio silence let me tell you that I have a good reason for that.

Do you remember the last time I sent you a tip? It was around November if I recall correctly.

If you bought that stock I told you about back then, you would've quadrupled your money at the very least.

Now here we are, a few months later and I've got something else to tell you about.

Basically if you remember, I've got a good acquaintance who works at a law firm in New York and when I took him out to a fancy steak dinner last Monday (with lots of wine) he became very talkative and let me in on a little tip.

This is what I want to share with you today. He essentially told me that some time mid next week, a small company called incapta (ticker: INCT) is going to announce that it's being acquired by a giant for a little over 1.30 a share (yes over a dollar thirty, and yes it's at just under 15 cents now)

He knows this because his law firm is the one that drafted all the paperwork for the deal and they are expected to finalize and sign the agreements today, with the official announcement coming some time between Tuesday and Thursday.

If you buy shares today, you are guaranteed to make approximately tenfold next week. The way it works is if you're holding the shares they will just take them out of your account automatically and credit you with the cash equivalent to 1.37 or so which you can take out whenever you want and spend on nice things.

Keep me in mind when you're rolling in it. I expect a big thank you and maybe a small gift!

Hi, Fannie – I would be interested in attending this organizing meeting at your place on Sunday the 2nd; it may be difficult for you to get away from work, but we have invited Arlie Hochschild (Strangers in Their Own Land) to be the keynote speaker at the Consortium of Social Science Associations advocacy day conference here in DC next Wednesday (http://www.cossa.org/event/2017-science-policy-conference/) – some WAPA folks may be interested in hearing her talk.

I've got strong reasons to believe that this stock is about to soar.

Alright, let's get right to it...

We've been out of touch for a while. I've been very busy looking for the next big stock that has the potential to explode and it took me months to find one.

If I can be honest, this one came to me as a god send. I got lucky. I have this friend who works at a law firm in NYC and we've known each other for a very long time.

Long story short, he told me that his firm is about to finalize a big takeover by a multibillion corporation. They're buying this tiny company that is now trading at just around 10 cents a share.

I couldn't believe my ears when I heard him say that they're paying somewhere between $1.30 and $1.39 for the company. The deal is closing and being announced mid next week.

I could get into what the company does, but who really cares right? All we need to know is that they are in the high tech industry and that this is going to be a huge buyout.

I recommend you buy shares as soon as possible today and wait it out until you get paid over $1.30 next week. The way takeovers work is that they will just credit this price per share, in cash, to your brokerage account and in exchange will take the shares that you bought at just pennies.

I may never have another tip like this, so cash in on it while you still can.

[wapadc] Fwd: For WAPA: CFP (Exploring Health and Vulnerability among Aging Populations)

Subject: For WAPA: CFP (Exploring Health and Vulnerability among Aging Populations)

Dear Dr. Norwood,

Hope this message finds you well! Would it be possible to send this CFP for the AAA meeting to the WAPA membership? Thank you so much in advance for any help.

Sincerely,
Cortney Hughes Rinker

 What Does It Mean to be Vulnerable?: Exploring Health and Vulnerability among Aging Populations
116th AAA Annual Meeting
November 29-December 3, 2017
Washington, DC

Organizers: Sheena Nahm (The New School) and Cortney Hughes Rinker (George Mason University)

Current discussions and debates about health care in the United States, as well as abroad, call for deeper and broader ways of understanding how health happens, what is considered to be "good" health, whose health is at risk and why, and how better outcomes can be ensured for less money. A discourse of vulnerability emerges from these conversations. In 2017, under the new administration in the United States, there is a push to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, and in this, offering insurance coverage and protection to those populations considered to be "vulnerable" has been a key part of the debate. Vulnerability has been evoked in terms of individual health and the barriers that may be in place to seeking high quality care, and also in terms of population health. According to Rogers (1997), everyone could be considered to be vulnerable at different points in their lives. Both individual factors and cultural and environmental ones can influence vulnerability. However, one specific group that has been consistently conceived of as being "vulnerable" in the United States and internationally is aging populations.

This AAA panel aims to bring together research that engages with "vulnerability" (broadly defined) and lies at the intersections of anthropology and gerontology. We seek to include papers that explore questions of how anthropological (and social science more generally) perspectives on vulnerability can impact current health policy debates and discussions about aging populations in the United States or globally. Presentations could span across studies of different types of "vulnerabilities" and focus on topics such as, illness experiences, patient-centeredness and whole person care, structural vulnerability, the political economy of disease, policy, structural violence, at-risk populations, end-of-life care, immigrant health, cultural practices of health, and aging in place—although other research on aging that engages with "vulnerability" could certainly fit within the panel. What does it mean when aging populations are considered to be "vulnerable"? What impacts does this have on how they experience health and on their health outcomes? What factors make certain aging populations "vulnerable" and what strategies are used to overcome these? What are the bigger theoretical questions about "vulnerability" and what critiques can be offered of the term? We welcome papers focused on the United States or abroad and those that are theoretical, methodological, and/or applied. Together this panel will offer insight into how ethnography and anthropological approaches to studying care among aging populations matter both inside and outside of academia.

If interested, please email your abstracts to Sheena Nahm (nahms@newschool.edu) and Cortney Hughes Rinker (chughe13@gmu.edu) by Monday April 3, 2017.
