[wapadc] Praxis Award 2017

Hi folks:

The WAPA Praxis Award is starting the 2017 cycle, and we need your assistance to get the message out to potential applicants. Please forward this message to colleagues and contacts who are doing exemplary work using anthropology as a vital part of their efforts. Most applications come from referrals by colleagues and friends, so your outreach efforts will help ensure a qualified pool of candidates.

Also note that this year we are moving to a somewhat easier application process. Rather than a full application, Praxis applicants can complete a two-page pre-application, that will help determine their appropriateness for the award and provide helpful feedback for preparing the full application. The deadline for pre-applications is May 1.

The pre-application form is attached in PDF format. Please forward this to potential applicants; the MS Word version in on award guidelines page of the WAPA website at http://wapadc.org/praxisnoms.

Serving this year on the Praxis Committee are Sue Taylor, Suzanne Huertin-Roberts, Jim Stansbury, Adam Koons, and me.

Below is a brief overview of the award. Thanks for your help!

Terry Redding

The Washington Association of Professional Anthropologists announces the 2017 WAPA Praxis Award. Since 1981, the biennial Praxis Award has recognized outstanding achievement in translating anthropological knowledge into action as reflected in a single project or specific endeavor (not career or lifetime achievement). WAPA interprets anthropological knowledge in its broadest meaning, encompassing theory, methods and data.

Applications should demonstrate anthropology's relevance and effectiveness in addressing contemporary human problems, particularly in client-based contexts. The competition for this prestigious award is open to anyone holding an MA or PhD in any subfield of anthropology. WAPA strongly encourages self-nominations from individuals, and also groups or organizations wherein at least one anthropologist worked on the designated project. WAPA would be especially pleased to see more internationally based applicants.

The Praxis winner receives a $1000 cash award. Details can be found on the WAPA website, www.wapadc.org/praxis. For specifics on entry requirements, select the "Guidelines for Praxis Award Nominations" link. To better understand the types of achievements that merit the award, potential applicants can review the "Praxis Award Recipients" document, which lists all prior awardees and presents the abstracts of their competition entries. Applicants are strongly urged to carefully read the award guidelines.

The deadline for pre-applications in May 1, 2017.
