Greetings !

Just in time to get you ready for tonight's meeting, a short recap from 11/18:

We had eight attendees including Dan Hockensmith (guest), Omer Ipekci, Nils Junge, Erin Shea, Jill Vanderweit, Katie Walter, Mark Wills, and Laura Zam.

  • Laura was first-time TMOE and did a great job! Her word of the day was "gratitude" – appropriate for the pre-Thanksgiving meeting.

  • Dan provided the first speech, entitled "The Little Green House on K Street," which gave us a dynamic historic recap of 1625 K Street NW, the location of his current office building. The goal of this speech was to bring history to life via storytelling, and Dan did just that, using a recap of his experience with the office security guard who informed him of the "infamous address" history (which involved "unethical and shady lobbying"), what I like to call "old-timey" descriptive words, and presidential intrigue. As Dan concluded "you never know, your house could be the next infamous address in DC!"

  • Nils gave speech #2, which used visual aids for "Adolescent Fantasies: Can They Go too Far?" – this speech took us through a history of his fondness for the Adventures of Tintin child book series, which had a big influence on Nils and his life's work, which has taken him to far-off places throughout his life. We got to see the many copies of the books he's collected over the years, all the way back to his childhood.

  • Next, Laura pitch-hit for Table Topics, where she came up with three great questions on-the-spot, including: Favorite Thanksgiving dish, the Most Important thing Learned from a Family Matriarch, and Life Regrets. Mark, Omer, and Katie stepped up to participate and gave great responses.

  • Speech evaluations by Omer and Jill were informative and helpful, as two of our most senior Talk for Change members.

  • The meeting wrapped up by Mark with a call for ideas for future volunteer activities for the group, to put our name into action. Jill also mentioned future TLI trainings (reach out to her with questions), and several updates were given about a January Open House and February speech contests.

Stay tuned for more updates to come and another great meeting later this evening!
