[tfctoastmasters:651] Talk for Change: 9/2 Meeting Notes

Hi all - 

Thanks to the three guests (Lennette, Kristin, and Diana) who came out last night for our first meeting in September -- we hope to see you back! Our meeting highlights: 

• President Mark was TMOE and framed this meeting around "motivation" -- with "incentive" being our a "word-of-the-day." He remarked that our "street-side Sinatra" normally singing just outside the Viva Center wasn't around -- guess he didn't have much incentive to stand out in the heat! Mark welcomed our guests, and led into a short ice-breaker exercise to get folks speaking quickly, asking each of us to introduce ourselves and explain why we were motivated to come tonight.
   
• Jill, our VP of Public Relations, gave the lone prepared speech, which was #8 from the Competent Communicator manual, "Get Comfortable with Visual Aids." -- this speech was a great topic given that we had several guests. In her speech, Jill explained the different core tracks Toastmasters can take: public speaking and leadership. Big take away was the value of a speech like this for new or aspiring members, and Jill's well-prepared and lively speaking! 
  
  
• Erin Club Secretary was asked to provide some Table Topics on the fly, and asked questions around "motivations" for the Fall season, plans for Halloween, and, just for fun, a favorite breakfast cereal. Thanks to all of our guests for contributing to Table Topics! 
  
  
• Our second-time guest Lennette provided a thorough timers report (thanks Lennette!) and Mark was our grammar champion, reminding us of the many filler words we rely on to get us through.  
  
  
• Mark opened the floor up for questions and we discussed how our guests can become members, and he closed the meeting by asking what our guests hoped to learn tonight. Responses included: leadership skills, confidence with speaking on-the-spot, and to be involved in a group that promotes positive change in the community. 
  
  
• Everyone participated in the meeting and I think all of us used the word of the day!!
