Next Monday, December 16 will be our last service project of 2013. We will be volunteering with Food & Friends and helping them prepare meals that will be delivered to people with life-challenging illnesses. Email dcyp.service@gmail.com to sign-up.

If you will be around the DC area in late December / early January and are interested in volunteering with Food & Friends outside of our December 16 date, they want to hear from you! They have a great need for volunteers during this winter holiday season. Bring along family, friends, or anyone you may know in the area. See the special announcement below for more details.

I am also pleased to announce that Kiwanis International is one of many organizations supporting an early childhood education bill that is in front of Congress now. Read below for more information on this special announcement!

Upcoming Events

Food & Friends
Where: Food & Friends (219 Riggs Road Washington DC 20000)
When: Monday, December 16, 6:00 - 8:00pm
Metro: Fort Totten (Green / YellowRed)

Join us this holiday season to volunteer at Food & Friends! The Food & Friends kitchen and grocery pantry prepares more than 3,000 meals each day, so it takes many helping hands to make sure all the food is prepped, portioned and packaged correctly. The kitchen is a fun, hands-on atmosphere where we will be preparing and bagging meals for their daily delivery to people living with life-challenging illnesses. Volunteers are asked to arrive promptly at 6pm.
To sign up to volunteer, email dcyp.service@gmail.com.

Special Announcements

Kiwanis supports early childhood education bill

Kiwanis International joins a growing list of organizations supporting The Strong Start for America's Children Act now before the United States Congress. The 10-year initiative is a roadmap for significantly expanding access to high-quality preschool for four-year-olds from low- and moderate-income families. It is receiving bipartisan support from lawmakers in Washington, DC.

The bill calls for US$75 billion to be spent on the initiative. Bill sponsors say research shows US$1 invested in high-quality early education today can save US$7 in the future. Early childhood education has also shown to improve academic performance, increase high school graduation rates and reduce criminal involvement.

Kiwanis International supports the legislation because it aligns with our Young Children Priority One program, which focuses on improving the lives of children from birth until age 5.

The entire bill, including congressional action, can be seen here.

Volunteers Needed at Food & Friends This Winter Holiday Season

The winter holiday season, Food & Friends needs volunteers to help provide thousands of nutritious meals to those living with HIV/AIDS, cancer, and other life challenging illnesses. Volunteers will most likely help with food preparation and packaging. Usually Food & Friends schedules groups of 4 - 20 volunteers, and shifts are generally 9AM – noon on Monday through Friday. (They also have limited availability from 1-3PM and 6-8 PM on Monday through Thursday.) Volunteers must be age 14 or older to volunteer with an organization for food preparation and packaging.

The other volunteer option is Meal & grocery delivery – they deliver over 3,000 meals each day, Monday-Saturday. Volunteers must use their own vehicles. Drivers need to be age 18 or older and have a valid driver's license. They have no age requirement for passengers. Most organizations team up volunteers and carpool, so that each driver has a navigator. A typical route is 6-10 households and takes between 1-3 hours, generally starting between 9 AM - noon. This is the best opportunity to interact directly with clients, and there are almost always meal delivery routes available.

Their greatest need for volunteers is during the 9-noon, morning shift, between December 24th & January 3rd.

If you would like to schedule a volunteer opportunity, please contact Jonathan Kundrat a tjkundrat@foodandfriends.orgThanks for all you do to support the mission of Food & Friends!
