Cultural Dynamics in the Health Outcomes: An Exploration through the Lens of HIV/AIDS

Dr. Elizabeth Meassick

 Monday December 11, 2023

7:00 to 8:30pm EST on Zoom

ABSTRACT:

This lecture delves into the critical intersection of culture and health outcomes, with a specific focus on the context of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment. Recognizing the profound influence of cultural factors on health behaviors, access to healthcare, and intervention impact, this exploration aims to deepen our understanding of the intricate dynamics shaping the outcomes of individuals living with or at risk of HIV/AIDS. Dr. Meassick will employ a multi-faceted approach, drawing on empirical evidence, case studies, and theoretical frameworks. The talk will analyze the ways in which cultural considerations influence perceptions of risk, engagement with healthcare services, and adherence to antiretroviral therapies. The exploration will emphasize the need for culturally sensitive approaches to address the diverse contexts in which HIV/AIDS manifests. Dr. Meassick will conclude by synthesizing key findings and emphasizing the importance of recognizing and respecting cultural diversity in designing effective interventions. It will underscore the need for a paradigm shift towards culturally informed strategies in the global effort to combat HIV/AIDS.

BIOGRAPHY:

With over 25 years of extensive experience in health programing my specialization lies in HIV program design and implementation - health strategy development, program development, integrated design, prevention, effective team leadership, budget analysis and strategic planning. Noteworthy highlights from my career encompass orchestrating the transition of a $400 million HIV portfolio from international to local partners, establishing community-led monitoring structures, and forging critical strategic partnerships for funding. My key priorities include data-driven decision-making, mentorship of teams, and adept budget management, all geared towards ensuring successful program outcomes. My work has predominantly spanned the African continent, with a strong emphasis on localization and co-creation, consistently showcasing my ability to lead teams and develop impactful health programs across the program cycle. I have worked with esteemed organizations such as Health and Human Services, PEPFAR-Department of State, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, USAID, and World Vision.

In my most recent position as the Chief Operating Officer at the Kenya Women and Children Wellness Center (KWCWC) from October 2022 to August 2023, my role involved providing strategic and technical direction to this newly established organization. My responsibilities encompassed defining the vision and mission for KWCWC, and cultivating crucial strategic partnerships for both funding and program implementation.

My unwavering commitment to education and capacity building is further demonstrated by my experience as an Adjunct Professor, where I have had the privilege of teaching at institutions such as Hillsborough Community College in Tampa Florida, USF, and GWU. I hold a Ph.D. in Medical Anthropology with a Minor in Public Health, complemented by a Master's degree in Development Anthropology. My deep-seated dedication revolves around equipping the upcoming generation of public health professionals with the knowledge and skills essential to effect positive change within the field.

[wapadc] Request for electronic copies of life histories

Hello all,

We have a women's personal and economic empowerment activity in the USAID project for which I work. In addition to all the quantitative measures, I included life history interviews with several of the participants in the activity design as a monitoring and evaluation approach.  However, the local grantee helping to implement the activity has no idea what a life history looks like. This summer I trained two of the grantee's staff members to collect and analyze life histories but I can't find a life history that can be shared electronically with the grantee in the Philippines.

Can anyone please help and send a life history so that the new Filipina life historians have some templates for how to write up a life history? If you have one, please send it to my work email address below.

Thank you, I will be very grateful and so will the grantee staff members!

A good holiday weekend to all,

Laurie

[wapadc] Nov. 13, 12pm EST: "Rethinking Later Life in the Global South: The Promise of Cultural Gerontology."

I wanted to share an event 12:00-1:00pm EST on Monday November 13, 2023. George Mason's Global Affairs Program and the Center for Social Science Research are hosting Dr. Tannistha Samanta from the FLAME School of Liberal Education. She will be giving a talk "Rethinking Later Life in the Global South: The Promise of Cultural Gerontology." Dr. Samanta is the co-Editor in Chief at the journal Anthropology & Aging. She received her PhD from the University of Maryland College Park. ABSTRACT: Recently, the plea to decolonize the university (or curriculum) has been an organizing theme for conferences, special issues of journals and talk series in the academy. Although energetic discussions around the role of the academy in post-colonial societies are gaining currency, gerontology's reluctance to engage critically with the emancipatory politics of decolonization is surprising. In this talk, I will draw from my own work where I weave the cultural politics of aging with the market, family, and popular representations to argue (1) how the gerontological research and teaching in India are afflicted with the (neoliberal) obligation to amass and 'measure' gerontological 'variables' at large, and (2) how can we rethink gerontological education and research that are free of co-optation (either by the 'global' higher education economy or prevailing 'local' powers). Overall, the attempt will be to show the transformative promise of cultural gerontology in recognizing the ambivalent complexities of later life in South Asia. RSVP at: https://forms.gle/fSMocfHJkn7U1pj19. All are welcome to attend virtually so please feel free to forward as well! - Cortney Hughes Rinker (Director of the Global Affairs Program & Associate Professor of Anthropology, George Mason University)
