NOAA's Northeast Fisheries Science Center is recruiting a Social Scientist for its Social Sciences Branch, which is one of the preeminent groups of marine resource economists and social scientists in the US, if not the world. Branch staff conduct cutting edge research and provide expert resource management support for commercial and recreational fisheries in the New England and Mid-Atlantic, as well as for protected resources, ecosystem based management, wind energy development, etc. Duty Station is Woods Hole, MA or Narragansett, RI. The position is a ZP-3 position, equivalent to the GS-11/12 level. We are especially interested in candidates with experience and interest in the following areas: ecosystem based management, climate change, and diversity, equity and inclusion.

The Social Scientist will:

• Serve on a multidisciplinary team of social scientists who develop social, economic, and cultural analyses applicable to ecosystem based management including commercial and recreational fishery management regulations and their impacts on social networks and coastal communities.

• Participate in multidisciplinary fisheries management plan teams that work to improve social impact analyses using models and methods that evaluate changes in social dynamics and adaptations to fishery management changes.

• Conduct social impact assessments of alternative fishery management actions to identify management alternatives that produce highest (or is least disruptive to) social and cultural benefits to fishery participants, social networks, and coastal communities.

• Collaborate with other Social Sciences Branch (SSB) staff on conducting research on social phenomena relevant to improving social impact analysis capabilities; present the research results in high-quality presentations to fishery managers, scientists, and the public; and participate in professional societies and professional meetings.
