[wapadc] AAA career webinars starting in July

Hi everyone:

Some colleagues working in academic situations may find their fall employment prospects rather dim. To that end, AAA will be conducting a series of four career webinars starting July 9 at 1 p.m. EDT. Successive webinars are slated for the three weeks following, same time slot. The first will be led by Sabrina Scott, and will focus in particular on the "elevator speech" to potential employers.

The current themes are as follows:
• Marketing yourself, including practice in giving an elevator pitch (via break-out sessions)
• Networking and preparing or updating a LinkedIn profile along with conducting an informational interview
• Creating an interesting and effective resume (via break-out sessions)
• Learning tips for responding effectively in a job interview

AAA is seeking younger professionals in particular (as I have now reached gray beard status, this means under 40 or so), particularly professionals of color, to serve as break-out discussion leaders during the webinars. Please consider participating and sharing your experiences and suggestions for the next generation of colleagues, or forward this message on to others who might be interested.

I am not sure of the specific time commitment, but there may be a pre-webinar discussion/orientation, and the webinars themselves will probably be an hour or two. No real prep is needed; it's just a matter of answering questions and sharing experiences.

If you are interested, or if you have questions or thoughts, please contact Elizabeth Briody, who is copied on this message, and me, ASAP.

Best wishes and stay safe,
Terry

[wapadc] Silos in anthropology

How can we strengthen anthropology, particularly in these fraught times? One approach is to try to break down silos or barriers that exist between academics and practitioners. This was the topic of a Presidential Session at the 2019 AAA/CASCA meeting; the session is now available via streaming video on the NAPA website at

https://www.practicinganthropology.org/annual-meeting/breaking-down-silos/.

Take a moment to have a look at the page, which includes presentation abstracts and videos based on PowerPoint presentations. At the bottom of the page is a discussion forum. Session participants hope this resource will help stimulate a dialogue with concrete ideas and strategies for breaking down the silos that have long existed in our discipline. We hope to hear your voice in this conversation!

[wapadc] Fwd: Please Circulate: The Persistence of Racialized Police Brutality and Community Responses

---------- Forwarded message ---------
From: kalfani ture <ture_k@yahoo.com>
Date: Thu, Jun 4, 2020 at 5:19 PM
Subject: Please Circulate: The Persistence of Racialized Police Brutality and Community Responses
To: Kalfani N. Prof. Ture <kalfani.ture@quinnipiac.edu>

The Persistence of Racialized Police Brutality and Community Responses

Over the past several days, we witnessed the continued devolution of what already is a tenuous relationship between police and Black communities. Sadly, the dramatic deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade and George Floyd add to a multitude of black and brown bodies that police have violently destroyed extra-judicially. No less traumatic are the quotidian encounters people of color experience with police that account for the frequent stop, question and frisk, racial profiling, driving while black and other forms of intrusive surveillance. The oppressive relationship between police and communities of color represent a national crisis, which is chronic, systemic, and driven by white supremacy, rather than the isolated results of a few bad apples spoiling the orchard. This fraught relationship is further complicated by the current Covid-19 pandemic, the pre-existing structural inequalities, and lateral policing. Informed by white supremacy, lateral policing is the active recruitment of everyday white citizens (see something, say something) to surveil black and brown bodies, mobilize/weaponize police resources against these bodies and their normal social practices, and in some instances calling for the full assumption of police authority to apprehend and incapacitate these bodies when they are perceived as threats.

Our colleagues in mental health, public health, sociology/social welfare, political science, and law along with community organizers and activists are actively developing interventions to improve this broken relationship, while anthropologists, by-and-large, conference the issue and or engage in scholarly activity within and among other anthropologists. This virtual discussion seeks to shift the various scholarly activities anthropologists engage in concerning police brutality and state sanctioned violence to a more public facing direction. Further, this discussion is guided by two principle questions: (1) What should an Anthropology of policing look like and (2) What practical and actionable steps should anthropologists, as cultural experts of the lived experiences of impacted communities, take to transform American policing.

Panel participants include Ramona Perez (San Diego State University), Kalfani Ture (Quinnipiac University), Donna Auston (Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey), Shanti Parikh, (Washington University, St. Louis), and Avram Bornstein (John Jay College of Criminal Justice).

This webinar is hosted by the American Anthropological Association [AAA] and presented by the Center for the Ethnographic Study of Public Safety and Community [EPACO] in collaboration with the Association of Black Anthropologists [ABA], the Association of Latina and Latino Anthropologists [ALLA], and the American Ethnological Association [AES].

Registration requires you to create an AAA account. Instructions, attached below. Please see registration link here to create an account attached:
