[NSCoderNightDC] Meeting tonight

I know I've been pretty bad at sending reminders in the past few months (years?) I so I'll make effort to get back into the rhythm of it. Guess what? It's Tuesday and therefore we meet tonight as always at 7:00p at La Madeleine near the Bethesda Metro station. In fact, that's where I'm typing this from :-).

Hope to see you around,
Jose

The 17th is my first choice.
The 14th is possible.
The 18th is out for me.

Hard to believe it has been ten years already. Here is a link to the original invite in case you don't believe me: https://greenmangos.wordpress.com/2007/10/

On a personal note, I'd like to thank all of you for your participation over the years. It is the community that makes this whole thing worthwhile. This meeting has allowed me (and others) to reinvent myself and to grow in this new career. But most of all, I'm grateful for all the friendships that have been created and fostered here over the years.

On a more "practical" side of things, we'd like to celebrate! Unfortunately, I did not get my act together in time to plan something for tomorrow. That may be a good thing, as tomorrow is Halloween and would probably conflict with people's schedules and generally made things more complicated. So… let's plan something… I'd like to have a biggish celebration to have an excuse to see those of you who perhaps can't make it in as often. So what works for you? I'm thinking two weeks from now, not sure what day of the week, let's say Tuesday, Friday or Saturday... If you'd be so kind, please reply with what would work best for you

1) Tuesday November 14
2) Friday November 17
3) Saturday November 18

The idea would be to reserve a big table at some place, probably somwhere with good beers near the orange line (venue suggestions also are welcome)

So what do you all think? Can we do this? I think it would be a blast to see as many of you as possible.

Cheers,
Jose

Hi Jose,

Since the day you hosted the very first iOSDevConf,  I have only been able to make it one time to NSCoder Tuesdays. Can't believe it's been 10 years.

Just pick a date and I will be there this time.

[wapadc] Ethnographers (with and without experience) wanted

Dear WAPA,

Ethnographers (with and without experience) wanted

WAPA's ethnography of civic engagement in the aftermath of 2016 elections, Voices of Virginia, is ready to launch and we need regional coordinators and ethnographers (with and without experience) to participate in data collection activities in six locations in Virginia.  If you are a new anthropologist, this is a great opportunity to get hands-on experience in interviewing, focus groups, participant observation, data analysis, and publication.  You will receive training and be paired with senior anthropologists for a mentor experience you won't forget.  If you are an experienced anthropologist, we need you in the field and to help mentor.  Participation can be nights, weekends, or whenever you can participate.  We do not have funding to cover salaries or travel expenses, but we have resources to support one another in helping to collect information that can speak to what both divides and unites people at the community-level.

Voices of Virginia: A Qualitative Study of Shared Understandings and Civic Engagement in the Aftermath of the 2016 U.S. Presidential Elections

The results of the 2016 U.S. elections and the highly contentious public debates that have followed in the aftermath has brought to the forefront the degree to which the pubic appears to be divided. What is not clear, however, is if this is a divide that is indicative of what media is representing, what political candidates are promoting, and/or what citizens at the community level actually think and feel about their neighbors and their communities.  Voices of Virginia offers a qualitative study (semi-structured interviews, observation and focus groups) on the perceptions, concerns, and conditions that are influencing the civic engagement activities of 300 Virginians in six diverse communities in the swing state of Virginia.  This study will explore the extent to which people from various backgrounds share the divisive views permeating political and media representations of current events and how the attitudes of these Virginians translate into civic engagement. The aim is to use Foucauldian discourse theory and ethnographic data to illuminate the impact of competing discourses at the public and community levels and to provide important information on what both divides and unites U.S. citizens in the aftermath of the 2016 elections.

How can I participate?

If you are interested or you know others living near any of the target areas who might be interested, please forward this notice.  We will be meeting this Saturday, October 28th from 3-5PM.  Join us on Saturday to help plan the launch of data collection in 2 of 6 communities and to hear updates on progress made in terms of study design, IRB approval, and upcoming project activities.Target areas include:  Annandale, Charlottesville, Harrisonburg, Pulaski county, Richmond, and Roanoke, Virginia.  Join us in person or by conference call below or feel free to reach out to the Co-Principal Investigator for more information:

Seriously... What if this company went tenfold by tomorrow?

Everyone knows me as a no bullshit analyst and I always give it to my friends just the way it is, whether it's good or bad.

Today though I've only got goodness to share with you because I've come across something so rare it only happens once or twice a year.

I found a stock that's going to jump tenfold by tomorrow due to negotiations for an acquisition that values it at much higher than where it is now.

The information I have is a hundred percent reliable and if you miss out, I guarantee you'll be regretting the decision in a few hours when this thing is up to 8 or 9 cents.

The symbol is qsmg this is all you need to grab it.

If you do miss out, it's ok... I will probably have another one to tell you about in a few months but at the very least you should watch this one closely.

Have a good one.

Best Regards,

Trinidad Herrera

LOOKING FOR TEMPORARY HOUSING

LOOKING FOR PERMANENT HOUSING

*** 10/2 Hey! I'm looking for a room in DC starting October 1st. I graduated from ND in 2014 and am an architect/urban designer moving to the city at the end of the month for a new job and to be closer to my family. I'm looking to find an apartment with access to the red line since I'll be commuting out to Bethesda. I'm up for moving into an existing place or finding an apartment with someone. I'm a respectful and clean roommate, and would have no problem keeping the common areas clean. I'll be pretty busy with work during the week and usually hit the gym after work, but am definitely up for sharing a beer or glass of wine with my housemates and chatting about our days. One other thing, I do have a small cat. Her name is Bella, and she is only about 7 lbs and very quiet and calm. If that was a concern in any way though, she could stay in my room the majority of the time, but she is very sweet and barely makes a noise. If you have an available room, just shoot me an e-mail at erica.ridlon@gmail.com. Thanks!***

*** 9/5 My name is Kevin Culligan, and I'm a recent graduate (class of '17) from Notre Dame. I'm starting a job in McLean, VA in a few weeks, so I'm looking for a male roommate in the Washington, D.C. area. Anyone interested can reach out to me at kcullig1@alumni.nd.edu. ***

*** 9/5 Hello, I am a 2017 ND grad moving to the DC area in September. I am working in downtown DC, but I am open to living in both DC and Virginia. I would prefer a female roommate with access to a metro station.  I am a organized, easy going person who is guilty of watching too much Netflix. Please email me at stakahat@alumni.nd.edu if you know of any opportunities. Thanks!***

*** 8/17 Hey Everyone! This is Terrence, class of '95. Go IRISH! I'm transitioning back to the area after some years away and looking for a room to rent (with a bathroom) near Logan Circle. I want to keep costs low and only spend $500 a month on the room if possible. I have family in the area and am staying with them while I sort through job opportunities (e.g. legislative research analysis) in the area. I am a great high character and low drama roommate. Please email me at tporterdc@outlook.com if you know of any opportunities. Thank you and Be Richly Blessed! Terrence***

HAS A ROOM/APARTMENT AVAILABLE

***(NEW) 10/19 Room available December 1 in Northeast Capitol Hill, 3 blocks from H Street, directly between the Eastern Market and Union Station metros and one block from a bikeshare. We are a five minute walk to some of the best bars and restaurants in DC, but still live on a quiet street with a community garden right behind us. The house has a huge cherry tree in the front yard and a patio with a garden and grill out back. Indoors we have all the streaming services and kitchen gadgets you could ever want. Rent for the first floor room is $615/month, and the bathroom is shared with one other roommate. Utilities are an additional $50-$90 depending on the season. The housemates are three women ages 25-30 -- one is an architect, one is an engineer, one is an ND grad who works for a nonprofit.  Please reach out to Beth Spesia with any questions: bethspesia@gmail.com***

***(NEW) 10/19 Seeking a female to take over the lease for my bedroom in a three-bedroom Woodley Park apartment, starting Nov. 1 (or sooner - negotiable). The complex is Cleveland House Apartments, which has a rooftop, nice sized gym, business center, etc. The building is a 5-7 minute walk to the metro and 15-20 minutes to Adams Morgan/Dupont Circle. Utilities are included in the room rate with the exception of cable/Internet which we split. Washer/dryer in unit. Option to keep current furniture for $200. The lease ends June 7, with the option to re-sign next year. If interested, contact katielenkiewicz@gmail.com.***

***(NEW) 10/19 11-month lease with option for renewal October 1, 2018 (100 Capitol Yards). *** 10/2 My husband and I are moving out of our 2-bedroom one bath apartment in Takoma Park/Silver Spring (at Flower and Hudson). Its only $1600 a month including utilities and laundry and is pet-friendly. It's on a ride along route, so its about a 10 minute bus ride to the red line or an easy bike ride. We are also right on the Sligo Creek Trail which is great for running. Let me know if you are interested and I will send you pics. We have been happy here but are having a baby and need more space.
