[tfctoastmasters:660] 10/7 Meeting Notes

Happy Sunday all!

Our last meeting was well-attended with several guests,11 attendees in total, and with all but one seat taken at the Viva center! Thanks for joining in and making it a great night.

  • Mark our TMOE began the evening with an "ice breaker" - "My idea of community," which we all went around and answered with our introduction. "Celebration" was our Word of the Day - which more than 3 people weaved into their commentary. We had two great speeches that both had a refugee theme.

  • Julie gave her 7th Competent Communicator speech entitled "What we can do," a nice combination of her personal experience and the current refugee crisis in Syria, framed around how we can do more to help the crisis (as the U.S., as individuals, and what we can do to help those in the U.S. now). Omer her evaluator said it was one of the best structured speeches he's seen, a challenging but well-handled topic, and overall a cause for celebration! -- Great job Julie!

  • Kristin gave her FIRST speech (!!) titled "At the Crossroads of Burek and Nasi Goreng" - a personal discussion of her experience meeting refugees during her childhood in the 1970's through her church, to her work experience in Kosovo where she got to know personal refugee stories, onto Indonesia where she found her "central and driving passion" for her work, bringing her to Iraq and unknowns about the future. Congrats on a great first speech Kristin!

  • Table Topics by Erin themed around the word of the night, "community" with questions posed around our improving our DC-area community, what we love about DC, and, the show "Community" star Chevy Chase - thanks to our three volunteers!

  • Beth was our Timer and Laura was our grammarian (she counted more than 60 filler words by the group) but otherwise our grammar was spot on!)

  • Nils was our general evaluator and congratulated our speakers on stimulating and thought provoking speeches, tied to the spirit of the club.

  • Finally, we had great feedback from club guess Deepak who said TfC "is the best club he's been to so far, with a great sense of "community" and very supportive.

On that note, let's continue to make our club strong --  have a great week!

SUPPORT VETERANS: THE INDIANA HONOR FLIGHT (SATURDAY, 10/31)

The Purdue Alumni Club has asked the ND Club to join them in supporting the Indiana Honor Flight on Saturday, October 31.  The Honor Flight Network is a non-profit organization that flies veterans from cities all over the country to Washington DC to honor them by transporting them to the various war memorials on the National Mall.  There is a group of approximately 200 veterans from the state of Indiana flying in on October 31st.  The Notre Dame Club is looking for volunteers for 1) greeting the veterans as they arrive at Reagan National by cheering, etc. as they get off the plane and 2) greeting the veterans at the different memorials themselves (the vets love reflecting on their experiences in the military and it is pretty rewarding to be able to walk around the memorials with them).

For Option #1, we would be looking for volunteers at National Airport for the 8:34am and 9:34am flights.  The flights are being called ABLE and BAKER.
•Greeters are asked to arrive at the airport at least 45 minutes early.
•Greeters shall RSVP at http://www.cvent.com/d/2rqyz5 NLT 27 October to get a Gate Access Pass which will allow them to pass security and greet the veterans at the gate upon their arrival
•Greeters who will pass security will be asked to present identification the day of the event at the airport.  Children are absolutely welcome and while they will not have to present identification, all children must still RSVP to be on the list.

For Option #2, after the veterans arrive and are transported to the National Mall, folks are welcome to join the veterans as they visit their respective war monuments.  Apparently veterans love when there are folks accompanying them.  We are waiting for specific details and times, and will pass that info on once we know!

If you are interested in supporting the Honor Flight veterans, please contact MaryKate Robinson @ marykate@alumni.nd.edu and let her know whether or not you plan on supporting Option 1 (airport greeting) or Option 2 (memorial meeting).  Thanks!
