[wapadc] Re: Register Now for WAPA's Spring 2019 Outing: A Visit to the NMAAHC

Hey Laurie. I tried to register for this event a couple of weeks ago, but got a message that my email was invalid. In scrolling down my emails, I found one from WAPA, dated May 1, that my membership had expired,, and concluded that this was the reason that it was not accepting my email. However, when I tried to renew my membership. Then I went to the membership page, and the first direction was to log in. But it does not say where to log in. It also say that I had to either pay with Pay Pal, or write a check.  but if I sent a check the membership renewal would not be processed for another three weeks.  I don't have, or want a Paypal account.

The bottom line is, I missed this event. But, no problem. I have made three trips, and will probably go several more times as a research activity related to one of the many future monographs that have planned, this one titled,  Thehe Cultural Systems Paradigm, and Coding, Reading, and Writing the National Museum of African American History.   I say future, because right now I am focused on completing the two related to the scarcity of African Americans in Anthropology. But because all of my planned monographs will be looking for collaborators and co-authors, I will be back in touch with the WAPA membership when I am ready to further plan and implement the NMAAH project.

I hope you all enjoy the museum, and the rest of your weekend. tlw.

Dear Tony Whitehead,

WAPA is going to the National Museum of African American History and Culture!  This email provides information for helping you plan your participation.  If you plan to attend, please register as soon as possible.  Admission is free, but spots are limited.

Hope to see you there!

Laurie Krieger

WAPA Program Committee Chair

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

What day will we be going?  Sunday, June 2

What time will we be meeting?  The museum tour will begin at 2 pm, but we are trying to negotiate an earlier arrival time because we want to eat at the museum's Sweet Home Cafe before our tour.  We will update this announcement as more information becomes available.

Do I need to register?  YES!!! We have space for 40 people. The number of people who attend must correspond to the passes reserved. We cannot accommodate even 41 people. If you reserve space but find you cannot attend, you must let us know as soon as possible, but no later than noon on Friday, May 31, so we can adjust the number of passes.

Where will we meet?  In front of the museum where groups enter.  Please be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

What if I'm late?  For this event, late arrival is definitely a problem.  The museum will not admit us until the entire group has arrived.  We will all end up waiting for you and that will cut into our time in the museum, so please do not be late! If you are on your way but running late, call Laurie at 301-675-5006 as soon as possible, and we will try to wait if the museum allows.

How do we get there?  There is virtually no parking near the mall, so please plan to take public transportation.  The nearest Metro stop is the Smithsonian on the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines.  For those with mobility issues, pedicabs run along Jefferson.  It is not a long walk from the Metro, but the NMAAHC is also not next door to the Metro.

MORE LATER ON THE EXACT MEETING TIME AND OTHER LOGISTICS.  Updated information will be posted on the website as it becomes available.  Everyone who registers will be sent a list of what items are not allowed by the museum and other updates as they become available.

[wapadc] May 14 Undergraduate Focus Group

Hello all.

Attached is a flyer of a focus group lunch discussion that I am hosting for black junior and senior anthropology majors at the Nyumburu Cultural Center on the UMCP campus next Tuesday, May 14, from 12-2pm.

Because I have space for up to 20 people, and I have only been able to identify 6 black junior and senior anthropology majors at UMCP, I am extending this invitation to their counterparts on neighboring campuses (American, Howard, GU, Georgetown, and others). So those of you who advise such students in the Baltimore-Washington Urban area, would you please forward this flyer on to them.

This discussion with Black anthropology majors is part of the research that I have  been doing exploring why Blacks (African Americans, Africans, and West Indians) are lowly represented among the faculty and graduate students of most U.S. anthropology departments, for a book manuscript that I hope to finish by the end of this year.  From anthropology faculty members that I have interviewed thus far, among the reasons for this relative absence of blackness among faculty and graduate students is that at the undergraduate level, Blacks often do not select Anthropology as a major. The most frequent reason that they don't, I have been told, is that black parents and their students don't view anthropology as a field in which one can earn a satisfactory living. Thus the reason for next Tuesday's focus group discussion, and others to follow with Black anthropology majors, is to explore such issues as how they came to adopt anthropology as a major, what their experiences have been as anthropology majors, and do their post-graduation plans include continuing studying anthropology in graduate school.

On the flyer, you can see that I am also inviting black professional anthropologists residing in the area, who might be interested in joining the discussion with some comments about how they came to anthropology, and what their experiences have been in professional practice. (This is a primary reason that I have copied WAPA , and ABA members residing in the area, on this email).

And finally, please note that those who are interested in joining us, please RSVP by Saturday, May 11, 12 noon.

Thanks and Take Care.
