[wapadc] WAPA at AAA; be a part
Hi WAPAistas:
WAPA will be very active at the AAA meeting, which will begin next week already. It will be at the Marriott Woodley Park, and the Omni down the hill will be the spillover hotel.
A summary of highlights is on the website home page:
http://wapa.cloverpad.org/#AAA. Be sure to come out Saturday to the special roundtables on working in the DC region. WAPA members have created four discussion sessions that should be useful and interesting.
This message is a final request to gather volunteers for the WAPA/NAPA table in the expo hall, which will be going on from Thursday to Saturday. Come get your new T shirt, see old friends, and check out everything else at the meeting. You will need to be registered for the meeting in order to volunteer.
There is an online calendar to sign up for the table. You need to put in your email and then pick a time slot you like (one or two hour blocks):
If you have any problems, contact the table scheduler, Jason Lind, at <jasonlindo@gmail.com>. Ron Nunn, Pamela Rao, and Dalia Golchan will be leading WAPA's table efforts, so join them!

Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, December 17th, at 6:45 p.m. at the Viva Center. Please note that the meeting on the 17th will be the last meeting for 2014. If, like me, you are trying to meet a personal goal of having presented a certain number of speeches before the end of the year, you will definitely want to sign-up for the December 17th meeting. You might also have some personal goals regarding roles and responsbilities (including Toastmaster of the Evening, Grammarian, etc.), and you still have a chance to sign-up for these roles, too! Please use the link provided herein, which will take you to our Google Docs website, and you can easily sign-up for either a Speech or for one of the Roles for the evening: Google doc - it's very easy to sign-up, but you can also email me (or call me at 917-855-9163) or one of our other TFC Officers (copied on this email), and we will be happy to update the Agenda, too. I am writing in regards to an upcoming event at St. Mary's College of Maryland. This event is free and open to the public. Please circulate this amongst your membership.
"Presenting Slavery in America"
December 3, 2014 4:45 pm in St. Mary's Hall
Historic sites with pasts linked to slavery are increasingly willing to incorporate the subject into their narratives. But the role that slavery plays in those narratives is still often difficult to pinpoint. How can cultural institutions interpret slavery in ways that reflect the humanity of slaves, the complexity of the institution, and its economic importance? How has this knowledge been interpreted for the general public outside of historic sites? Come join leaders in several fields for an engaging conversation about approaches, successes, and failures, as well as strive to improve our coverage of this central topic in American History.
The panel will be moderated by Michael Blakey, biological anthropologist and former director of the African American Burial Ground Project, Department of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary
Panelists include:
- Azie Dungey, creator of the YouTube series "Ask a Slave" and former interpreter at Mount Vernon
- Christy Colemen, president of the Civil War Center
- Matthew Reeves, director of archaeology, Montpellier
- Jeanne Pirtle, director of education, Sotterley Plantation
- Wes Brown, creator/screenwriter of "Ascension," winner of the 2014 AMC Austin Film Festival Television Screenplay Competition

Join us tomorrow to watch the last home game of the season as the Irish take on the Louisville Cardinals. We'll be watching at The Exchange. The game starts at 3:30 PM ET, so make sure you're there to cheer on the Irish! The Exchange is located at 1719 G Street NW, close to the Orange, Blue, and Red lines.

Join the ND Women Connect DC team tomorrow for the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk to raise money for St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
Date: Saturday, November 22, 2014
Time: Check-in starts at 8 a.m., and the walk starts at 9:30 a.m. The walk takes about one hour, so there is plenty of time to make it home to watch ND take on Louisville!

Caity Schneeman '08, Katie McArdle '08, and Katie Murray '06 are looking for volunteers to help out at their middle school in Anacostia, KIPP DC: AIM Academy. We are specifically looking for people to help run small reading intervention groups for children who are behind grade level. The groups meet from 12:30-3, 4 days a week.
