***Small room available Nov. 1st (flexible if earlier move-in date needed) on ground floor of newly renovated Capitol Hill/H Street area row house. Rent is $700 per month plus utilities (usually less than $50 per person). The room has large windows and is big enough for a twin or possibly full bed with some other furniture. Depending on the circumstances, the room can come partially furnished. The room has its own back porch and some storage space. It is located next to the kitchen/living area and is separated by a curtain, although the housemates are open to other sorts of dividers. 20 minute walk from Union Station, 15 minute walk from Eastern Market/Barracks row bars and restaurants, 8 minute walk from H Street bars and restaurants. Convenient to several major bus lines (96, 90, 92, D6, X2, among others). Street parking is usually available with a Zone 6 tag. Capitol Bikeshare 1/2 block away. Roommates are two siblings from Nebraska (both working in consulting) and one graduate student from Ireland. We are a low key group, like to get or make dinner/happy hour together occasionally but no enforced social activities. We do have weekend parties occasionally that may involve beverages and snacks, but week days are pretty chill. Out of town visitors stay over at least a few times a year but tend to compensate with food and/or beverages. We would love to have someone live here who is awesome, will appreciate the idiotic mini poodles next door, and enjoys the occasional bad movie. Email Shannon Bopp at sbopp1@gmail.com for more information.***
***Perfectly maintained, one bedroom/one bath apartment/condo located in the center of Bethesda, in a well-maintained, well-managed and safe condo building. Other features include: stainless steel appliances, washer and dryer in unit, granite counter tops, wood floors and a balcony. Very convenient location to NIH, Walter Reed. Pets/dogs/cats allowed. Tenant pays parking ($200 total for two spaces), electric and cable bills, we pay the rest (gas, water, condo fees). Available September/October (negotiable). My husband or I am available this week to show the apartment. Email me at emnolan82@gmail.com for pictures or to set up a time to see the place.***
***Seeking new lady roommate -- available immediately -- in Falls Church, VA: Four Catholic women looking for 5th housemate for a 3-level, end-unit town home. We are close to Route 66, 495, the West Falls Church Metro (Orange line), and on a rush-hour bus line. We live in a quiet and pleasant neighborhood with plenty of parking. House has hardwood floors, large eat-in kitchen, formal dining room, living room, downstairs den area, washer/dryer, storage, and wireless internet. Rent is $546 per month, plus utilities (average $75-$100/month). Close to downtown Falls Church, Arlington, and DC, including two very nearby Catholic churches (St. James and St. John the Beloved). Lots of nearby trails and paths for walking/running. Nice, fun, no-drama housemates, who like to cook, work out, explore the area. New roommate would fill an upstairs room with a big window overlooking lawns and neighborhood, lots of natural light, and shares a large, clean bathroom with 2 other ladies.iamurphy.iam@gmail.com ***
***The house on McKenney Ave in Silver Spring, MD is a 10-min walk from the Forest Glen metro station--4 stops on the red line from CUA--and close to Washington, D.C. A block away from St. John's Catholic church, and a short distance to CVS, Whole Foods, farmers' markets, etc. Every housemate has her own room and shares the house with four other women who are grad students and professionals. The house has 5 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, a dining room, sun room, and a garden with veggies and herbs. We have dinner together on weeknights. Rent is $550 or $615/month plus utilities, depending on the room. Nobody has pets. We very much enjoy having guests for dinner and welcome female overnight guests. You can move in immediately. We are a chill house with a respectful atmosphere and throw great parties every once in a while. We love good food, good beer and wine, great conversations--and we love having all of those on our back porch, sometimes spilling out in the yard and going late in the night around the fire pit. And there may be the occasional free concert - one of our housemates has a piano on which she plays beautiful music for us all to enjoy. We share dinners Monday-Thursday, which is awesome, as you only have to cook one night a week! Email for pictures:). If this atmosphere sounds good to you, please contact me at rachelmcoleman@gmail.com ***
***PRICE: $1,000 / month (This needs to be subleased. I am willing to negotiate.) I am moving out of town (got a job in New York), and need someone to take up the rest of my lease. Heavily reduced price in a very roomy 1 bedroom apartment. Currently live in this myself, but can easily accommodate two people in this one unit. SPECS: This is a one bedroom, 1 full bath 880 square feet apartment with a sunroom, washer/dryer in-unit, and has nice kitchen with a dishwasher. Included in the rent is a 24-hour gym with an indoor basketball court, swimming pool. 24/7 staffed with emergency work orders anytime as well as FREE indoor parking for cars and bikes and FREE BUS to the Metro (Pentagon and Pentagon City). If you want to take on the apartment after the end of October 31, the rent is $1600 per month and you would have to sign a lease with apartment management. [wapadc] Fwd: Panel on "Presenting Slavery in America"
From: Gijanto, Liza <lgijanto@smcm.edu>
Date: Mon, Nov 10, 2014 at 1:55 PM
Subject: Fwd: Panel on "Presenting Slavery in America"
To: wapadc@gmail.com
I am writing in regards to an upcoming event at St. Mary's College of Maryland. This event is free and open to the public. Please circulate this amongst your membership.
"Presenting Slavery in America"
December 3, 2014 4:45 pm in St. Mary's Hall
Historic sites with pasts linked to slavery are increasingly willing to incorporate the subject into their narratives. But the role that slavery plays in those narratives is still often difficult to pinpoint. How can cultural institutions interpret slavery in ways that reflect the humanity of slaves, the complexity of the institution, and its economic importance? How has this knowledge been interpreted for the general public outside of historic sites? Come join leaders in several fields for an engaging conversation about approaches, successes, and failures, as well as strive to improve our coverage of this central topic in American History.
The panel will be moderated by Michael Blakey, biological anthropologist and former director of the African American Burial Ground Project, Department of Anthropology at the College of William and Mary
Panelists include:
- Azie Dungey, creator of the YouTube series "Ask a Slave" and former interpreter at Mount Vernon
- Christy Colemen, president of the Civil War Center
- Matthew Reeves, director of archaeology, Montpellier
- Jeanne Pirtle, director of education, Sotterley Plantation
- Wes Brown, creator/screenwriter of "Ascension," winner of the 2014 AMC Austin Film Festival Television Screenplay Competition

Please let me know if you would like any further information,
